Liverpool are through to the last 16 of the Champions League but apart from that they won't take too many positives from the game tonight. Marseille were the better side for the majority of the game and had they possessed someone like Torres up front, they would surely have won the game given the chances they created. Liverpool were really poor but got the job done and that's the main thing.

Full Time90 The final whistle goes and somehow Liverpool have held on for a 1-0 win here at Anfield tonight.

90 There will be three minutes of added time.

89 Bonnart goes off for Samassa.

88 Alonso commits a foul as he challenges for Gerrard's corner.

87 Lucas combines with Alonso but his cross into the box is headed clear by Hilton.

85 Lucas Leiva comes on for Kuyt.

84 Valbuena fouls Mascherano on the right flank and Liverpool have a free-kick.

Yellow Card82 Mascherano cynically chops down Valbuena in midfield after being dispossessed and the Marseille players are furious. There's a coming together of about 10 or 12 players. Mascherano is booked as is Niang.

81 Another glorious chance for Niang but he sends his close-range header wide of Reina's goal. He has missed some gilt-edged chances tonight.

80 Ben Arfa goes down on the left and it's another free-kick to Marseille. Liverpool have been so, so poor all night it has to be said. Marseille are totally dominating.

78 Kone is replaced by Mathieu Valbuena.

77 Ziani's free-kick into the box only needs a touch to direct it past Reina in the Liverpool goal but somehow everyone misses it and Reina gathers.

76 Xabi Alonso shoots well wide from 30 yards out.

75 Zubar again lashes the ball well over the bar from 35 yards out when he has team-mates around him in better positions.

73 A really good pass by Taiwo finds Kone down the left wing but he is well tackled by Carragher.

72 Zubar hauls down Torres on the left flank. Liverpool have a free-kick and some respite.

70 Great play by Niang again as he paces away from the Liverpool defence but his left-footed effort is brilliantly blocked by Dossena. Liverpool are hanging on here.

69 Ben Arfa takes the free-kick and his curling effort is brilliantly turned round the post by Reina, superb goalkeeping. But Liverpool are all over the place here, Marseille are dominating.

68 Dossena chops down Niang right on the line of the box - that was so close to being a penalty. A free-kick is given but Liverpool get lucky there.

67 Adam Williams says: "I'd like to respon to Chris. Although I agree with him about Benitez making rash decisions, come on Liverpool, and that we can win the Champions and Premier challengers is because of Rafa. Since 04/05 we have become world class again and his decisions have been vital. No one is a better tactician and after all, we all make mistakes from time to time. Rafa is certainly not holding us back in our quest for glory League, I think the main reason we can consider ourselves title this season, he's pushing us on!"

66 Zubar blasts high over the bar from around 35 yards out. A real waste.

65 Renee Lancaster says: "If you consider how much Liverpool have developed over the Benitez era it's amazing, I think people need to give him his credit and not get on his back so quickly. He is able to attract some of ther best players in the world. If he were to leave an awful lot of players would follow him, just look at Drogba...looks like he's going to Inter.

If given the same amount of time as Ferguson, Benitez will be a legend."

64 Benayoun comes on for Reira.

63 Gerrard sends Torres clean through on goal - but the Spaniard is flagged for offside.

62 Ben Arfa easily beats Dossena but his low ball across goal misses everyone. Great play by the winger, but again the final ball is lacking.

61 Good move by Liverpool leads to Reira forcing Mandanda into a save with a powerful shot from a tight angle.

61 Yossi Benayoun looks like he will be coming on shortly.

60 Liverpool break quickly but Javier Mascherano's pass is far too hard for Torres and Taiwo collects.

59 Carragher defends well against Kone but concedes a corner.

58 Ben Arfa's pass across the box for Cheyrou is well cut out by Kuyt.

57 Gerrard shoots a few feet wide from 25 yards out.

56 Another chance for Niang. Great turn to beat Carragher 30 yards from goal but his effort on goal is a weak one and Reina easily holds it.

55 Niang gets in behind the Liverpool defence again but this time he is offside.

54 Gerrard's long ball looking for Torres is once again overhit by the Liverpool captain.

53 Chance for Niang but he just fails to get a connection on a chipped ball forward. A warning for Liverpool there.

52 Niang drops deep but his pass forward for Kone is cut out.

51 Taiwo clips the heels of Kuyt on the Liverpool right.

49 Chris thinks "we have a great chance doin both champ leaugue an the league, only thing holding us back is Benitez I think, he can make some weird first team choices sometimes, hasn been as bad this year but he also makes some rash decisions on players to bring on at important times in matches!!! If Benitez sorts that out we will be sorted!!C'mon Pool!!!"

48 Zubar gets free at the back post again but sends his header wide. He was offside in any case.

47 Zubar makes a good challenge on Torres inside the box at the expense of a corner.

46 Liverpool get the second half under way. Andrea Dossena is on for Liverpool to replace Aurelio.

Kris Jones says: "Keith, you should learn your Liverpool history as a Bluenose. Yes, Shanks lead us into Europe for the first time but we were only champions of the UEFA cup under him, Rafa won the European cup, the BIG one."

Keith Abbot says: "I know Benitez passes Shankly's Euro record tonight, but it not an impressive record to attain. Shanks took Liverpool from nothing to Euro champs, These days it's easier to qualify for the CL, and there are a lot more meaningless games. Shanks also did it over many more years. And I'm an Evertonian !"

Liverpool have barely moved out of third gear but lead 1-0. Marseille have enjoyed plenty of possession but have failed to really trouble Liverpool in the final third, a few long-range shots apart. Marseille need to win this game which may play in into Liverpool's hands in the second 45.

Half Time45 The half-time whistle goes with Liverpool leading 1-0 thanks to Gerrard's strike.

45 Reira finds space on the edge of the box and his shot on the turn is turned round the post by Mandanda.

45 There will be one minute of added time.

45 Gerrard hauls down Zubar from behind with a sliding challenge and is lucky not to be shown a yellow card.

43 Promising break by Marseille but Ben Arfa's shot from the edge of the box lacks power and Reina gathers.

42 Cheyrou almost finds Kone with a through ball but Arbeloa cuts it out superbly.

41 The visiting fans are still making a fantastic noise even though their side is 1-0 down. Marseille have played some really good stuff but it's hard to see where goals will come from.

39 Ben Arfa carelessly strokes the ball out of play and Liverpool have a throw.

38 Marseille need to win the game and they will be buoyed by the fact Liverpool haven't kept a clean sheet in this group yet.

37 From the corner, Reina makes a mess of it, completely misjudging the flight of the ball and Zubar heads over when it looked easier to score. Great chance for Marseille.

36 Great strike from long range by Taiwo which Rein does fantastically well to touch onto the post and divert for a corner. What a hit by the defender.

35 Ziani's decent ball into the box is completely missed by all of his team-mates.

34 In the other game in this group, Atletico lead PSV 2-0 so Liverpool are up against it as far as topping the group goes.

32 Torres has been quiet so far, he hasn't scored at Anfield yet this season, will he get it tonight?

31 Again Marseille keep the ball really well under pressure but don't trouble Liverpool in the final third.

30 Bonnart delivers the ball into the box from deep but none of his team-mates can get on the end of it.

29 Torres almost gets on the end of a through ball but Taiwo defends well.

28 Marseille gift possession back to Liverpool but Albert Reira can't make the most of it.

26 Liverpool are enjoying the bulk of possession now, Gerrard's goal looks to have deflated the French side.

25 Marseille must really go for it now, they need to win here and that will surely play into Liverpool's hands.

Goal23 GOAL - Who else on a Champions League night but Gerrard? He ghosts in at the back post completely unmarked and powers a header past Mandanda in the visiting goal. Excellent header and Liverpool have the lead

22 First real chance of the game falls to Kuyt. Good play by Torres on the right as he beats his man and chips into the middle for Kuyt but it's a difficult header for the Dutchman and although Mandanda makes the save, he makes a meal of it.

21 Niang has picked up a knock now but it looks like he can continue without treatment.

20 Marseille lose possession again in their own third and Kuyt almost finds Torres with a cut-back but it's cut out. Marseille look comfortable but have made a few errors at the back.

19 Gerrard's first-time pass out wide is overhit. Liverpool are struggling to break down Marseille at the moment.

18 Kone is back on the field after his short spell of treatment.

17 Daniel Agger pushes forward and lets fly at goal from 25 yards out with his left foot but it's an easy take for Steve Mandanda.

16 The striker is receiving treatment and has gone off, for how long we don't know yet. But play resumes with Liverpool in possession.

14 Great skill by Ben Arfa as he beats two men in his own half before feeding Niang but the move breaks down inside the box as Bakari Kone goes to ground and stays there clutching his shoulder.

13 Hatem Ben Arfa runs the ball out of play on the left flank and Liverpool have a throw.

12 Lee Dawes answers the point about Liverpool's home form. He says: "now i understand that the home form as not been what were used to seeing but we have managed to keep pace with chelsea and also stay ahead of man u and arsenal so i dont think that this is a problem yes we would love it to be like the past couple of seasons but if we lift the title at end of season who cares"

11 Marseille are having a go here, they have to, if they don't win they are out.

10 The Marseille fans are making all the noise in the first 10 minutes, we've hardly heard a peep from the home fans so far.

9 Blake Tovey reckons: "Great decision by Benitez to drop keane - hes been a real flop so far. great to see gerrard back and i predict a 3-0 win for liverpool. A torres double and a superb strike from gerrard - having these 2 back fully fit will really aid our title ambitions - champions league and premiership winners 2009!!"

8 Kuyt takes advantage of a mistake at the back but his low cross looking for Fernando Torres is cut out unconvincingly by Bonnart.

7 Dirk Kuyt tries to release Steven Gerrard on the right but his ball is just too long.

6 Liverpool press the ball well but the visitors look good in possession and Jamie Carragher is forced to scramble clear a Taiwo cross.

5 Buddy Stamper isn't convinced about Benitez's team selection, saying: "This game is important to Rafa and Liverpool but I would have preferred a more attacking team!"

3 Alvaro Arbeloa almost gets in behind the Marseille full-back Taiwo but eventually the last touch is by the Liverpool man and it's a goal-kick to the visitors.

2 Shannon emails in to say: "Gareth, im watching your minute by minute update from my desk at work in New Zealand and am looking forward to a reds win. After the unconvincing display against Fulham I'm hoping the reds will come out firing and put Marseille away early." Liverpool haven't been firing on all cylinders at home this season, drawing with Stoke and struggling in other games, how much of a concern is that for Reds fans?

1 Marseille get the game under way here at Anfield.

90 + 4 ALL OVER. The match ends goalless as neither side can find a break through. Torres has endured a frustrating return to the Liverpool first XI as Fulham earn a deserved 0-0 Premier League draw at Anfield. Let me have your thoughts on today's match at peter.fraser@bskyb.com. Stay with us for all the post-match reaction.

Substitution90 + 2 Fulham look to have earned a deserved point as Bullard is replaced by Chris Baird.

90 ADDED TIME: There will be a minimum of four minutes added time.

88 That could be that as Alonso is set up by Babel on the edge of the box but, under pressure, the former smashes in to row z.

86 Alonso has made a real impact as he plays through Keane, who is denied by Hughes. Benitez could be in for criticism after naming the midfielder on the bench.

Substitution84 Dempsey makes way for Zoltan Gera as Fulham run down time.

83 Liverpool win a debatable corner as Torres challenges with Hughes. Aurelio attempts an audacious volley and punts the ball out of play.

Substitution81 Kuyt makes way for Nabil El Zhar.

80 Ten minutes to go on Merseyside. A well-organised Fulham shut up shop a long time ago and it does not look like Liverpool have what it takes to break the deadlock.

Substitution76 However, it is Babel that comes on in place of Riera. The clock is ticking for Liverpool. This is the sort of game they must win if they are to end an 18-year wait for league glory.

75 The home side waste the set play. A knowledgeable Chris 'JJ' Power has been in touch to suggest that Yossi Benayoun needs to make an appearance in a flat figure four midfield. The Israel international midfielder would be keen to make an impression after recently complaining about his lack of opportunities.

74 Liverpool win a corner.

72 Fulham break and Johnson, who has four goals in four games, has too much pace for Carragher but his weak shot is straight at Reina.

70 In-form Kuyt is again at the heart of the action as a cross is deflected into his path off Pantsil but Schwarzer saves brilliantly high to his right and Fulham clear the resulting corner.

69 Alonso attempts to pick a trademark pass, but Schwarzer is off his line to stop Kuyt.

68 The crowd are beginning to criticise Lucas as he gives away a foul against Johnson. Fulham are offering little as an attacking threat and seem to have settled for a draw. Watch this space...

67 Reina shows his frustrations with Mediterranean wave of the hands when he has the ball at his feet and no options.

Substitution64 Liverpool win a free-kick and during the break, to the delight of Anfield, Mascherano makes way for Alonso. Surprising it is not Lucas?

62 We have a break in play as Murphy is down with what looks a nasty injury following an accidental clash with Lucas. Alonso is receiving instructions from Benitez on the touchline.

59 Liverpool win a corner as Schwarzer allows the ball to go out when he had time to keep the ball in but Hangeland heads clear unchallenged. Torres is the only threat for Liverpool. Keane is horribly lacking in form and confidence. His spirits will not be raised if he reads my thrilling, but cutting, commentary.

57 Liverpool are pressing and Fulham are pinned in as Riera bursts into the box but Hughes defends well. I get the feeling that a goal is not far away for one of the sides. Still do not rule out a Fulham counter.

55 Carragher slips with Zamora lurking, but the Liverpool skipper recovers magnificently to hack clear.

52 Schwarzer - who spent half-time perfecting his cross collection technique on the field - flaps at the corner but Kuyt cannot quite get a touch at the far post. Liverpool have turned up a gear and Torres is looking very dangerous.

51 Not sure Lucas deserves the criticism. He is a solid player, but this is not the sort of game in which he blossoms. Benitez has clearly has a word or two at the break as Torres forces Schwarzer to palm for a corner.

49 Liverpool have started brightly as Torres curls narrowly wide. Lisa May also wants to see Babel, but she feels Riera can prove vital in the second half. Elsewhere, let's just say that Lucas is not Mr Popular.

47 No changes on the field, but the betting odds have altered. Sky Bet have Liverpool at 8/13, a draw at 17/10 and Fulham are at sevens.

46 WE'RE BACK!! Fulham get the second half going.

Martin Nicholls feels Alonso is a must for Liverpool, but he also believes 'super sub' Ryan Babel would be a shrewd introduction. Not a bad call Martin.

What changes do Liverpool need to make to improve? Will there be any substitutions? Can Fulham cause an upset or will their hosts maintain a title charge. Let me have your thoughts at peter.fraser@bskyb.com.

Half Time45 + 1 HALF-TIME: An instantly forgettable first half comes to an end. Liverpool are badly missing Gerrard in the centre of the park, while Fulham have looked the better side. The West London outfit are using the ball intelligently and look very dangerous on the counter attack.

Half Time45 ADDED TIME: There will be one minute added time before the break. Sixty seconds too many in my opinion.

43 Kuyt moves in from the right and feeds Torres but he is a little safe with the pass and fires straight at Schwarzer from the edge of the box. Fulham appear to be looking for half-time.

41 I take it back. Torres over-runs the ball and Pantsil pinches possession. It was a bad second touch from Torres. Commentator's kiss of death.

40 Five minutes to go until the interval and still no sign of a goal as Torres heads over from 15 yards. He did well to win the ball ahead of Aaron Hughes and is looking sharp on his return to the first team.

38 Carragher heads away an improved Bullard free-kick. Alonso is warming up on the sidelines. Liverpool are badly missing the former Real Sociedad star. Do not be surprised to see an appearance at half-time. The Reds need a passing influence in midfield.

36 Do not rule out an upset today. I have been very impressed by Fulham, who I tipped for relegation at the start of the season. Consider this an official apology. Hodgson's side are passing with skill and look dangerous on the break as Bullard has another free-kick opportunity.

34 Great save from Reina to deny Bullard! Fulham are using the ball with more nous than their hosts and Zamora makes a fool of Javier Mascherano wide on the right before setting up Bullard on the edge of the box. However, Bullard's curling effort is expertly tipped behind by Reina.

30 With Gerrard missing, Torres is the only player who ups the tempo. Paul Howard claims to be about to jet off to New York for a spot of Christmas shopping. Safe to say a 'Best of' Robbie Keane goals for Liverpool will not be on his list of must-buys. It could be quite a few years wait for that product on this evidence.

28 Keane is denied by a great block from Schwarzer. A deflected effort from Lucas sees the former Tottenham player in acres eight yards from goal but he wastes the opportunity and Schwarzer takes it in the face.

26 Fulham win a corner. But Liverpool earn an offside decision against (guess who?) Johnson after only half clearing.

25 Keane goes on a mazy run and cuts the ball back but, with Kuyt about to pull the trigger from 18 yards, Paul Konchesky dives in to tackle.

23 Torres wants a free-kick on the edge of the box, but Pantsil's challenge is well timed. It is easy to see why only Liverpool and Chelsea have conceded less goals than Fulham in the Premier League this season. The Cottagers are very well drilled at the back.

20 Jim Honeyman feels Keane is, "not worth £10million let alone £20m." A sign of the action, or lack of it, that I have the chance to check my inbox for your welcome emails as Bullard curls another poor free-kick straight out pf play. A waste and Bullard knows it.

18 Fulham have a free-kick wide on the left. Bullard delivers after he was brought down by Kuyt. Liverpool only half clear and Bullard again turns the ball into the danger area, Johnson swivels but his effort is straight at Jose Reina. Best chance so far.

17 Fulham appear understandably cautious of Torres as John Pantsil stands off. But the Liverpool ace tries to much and Fulham clear.

16 Torres does brilliantly to shake off Brede Hangeland but Keane wastes a potential one-two, much to the annoyance of The Kop. I have been unimpressed by Keane in a red shirt. Has the Republic of Ireland international justified his fee?

14 Johnson appears keen to impress against his old rivals. The striker is looking lively and Fulham are using the ball nicely, while Liverpool are sloppy.

12 I would be telling porkpies if I said that I was impressed by the start to this afternoon's match. Whether both sides are suffering a hangover from the international break I am not sure. Anfield is very quiet as Gerrard watches on from the stands looking a little bored.

10 As Torres is unfortunate to see the ball slip out of play following a deflection off the corner flag, Jay Hasson expects the Spain star and Keane to score twice in a 4-0 win.

9 Is the start of the match a sign of things to come? Or will Liverpool or Fulham soon slip in to their stride? Will the scrappy start suit Fulham as they attempt to frustrate their hosts? Don't forget it is peter.fraser@bskyb.com if you want to get in touch.

8 It has all been a bit scrappy in the opening minutes. Neither team seems to want to keep possession as Fabio Aurelio gives the ball away.

6 Torres does well out wide on the left, but his cross is claimed by Mark Schwarzer. Fulham attempt to break straight away but £10million man Johnson, who has a habit of drifting offside, is stopped by a flag.

4 Deadly Dirk Kuyt should have done better as Alvaro Arbeloa breaks down the right and squares for the Dutch forward who drags his shot wide of the far post from 10 yards. Poor miss.

3 Liverpool attack as Albert Riera cuts in from the left, but the Spaniard is on his right foot and wastes possession when attempting to pass to Keane. A shot might have been a better option.

2 Early stages, but Fulham have begun on the front foot and are looking to get the ball to the strike partnership of former Everton striker Andy Johnson and Bobby Zamora as quickly as possible.

KICK-OFF!!! Liverpool get us under way. The Reds take kick-off but immediately give the ball to Fulham.

FT The referee blows his whistle for full-time. Liverpool have won 2-0 after seeing off a battling Bolton side. The Reds move three points clear at the top of the table for the time being.

90 Gerrard's cross from the right is somehow turned wide of goal by Lucas from two yards. Yet another wasted chance.

90 Davies' half-volley is deflected behind for a corner by Carragher. Bolton waste the resulting flag-kick.

90 We are in the first of three minutes of additional time.

Substitution90 Liverpool make their final change of the match with Yossi Benayoun taking the place of Riera.

89 Gardner's corner is awful and Aurelio is able to head the ball clear before it gets anywhere near the Liverpool goal.

88 Elmander's cross from the right is turned behind for a Bolton corner by Agger.

87 Torres fires a powerful effort against the outside of Jaaskelainen's left hand post from six-yards. Yet another bad miss in a game full of wasted chances.

Yellow Card86 Carragher has been booked after showing dissent to the referee.

85 Gardner runs onto Nolan's lofted pass and somehow manages to turn the ball over the top of the bar with only Reina to beat. Poor finishing from Bolton today.

Substitution85 Liverpool now make their second change of the match with Lucas taking the place of Kuyt.

Substitution84 Bolton make their second change of the match with Ebi Smolarek taking the place of Taylor.

83 Taylor's cross from the right is punched clear by Reina on the edge of his six-yard box.

82 Samuel is unfortunate not to win a free-kick as he bundled to the ground by Mascherano.

81 Alonso's rasping effort from 25 yards is superbly turned away from the top of his goal by Jaaskelainen. Great effort from the Liverpool midfielder.

80 Torres races through one-on-one with Jaaskelainen but his first touch is poor and the Bolton goalkeeper is able to clear the danger.

79 Riera slips as he looks to claim Alonso's pass to the left flank and the ball races out of play.

78 Alonso's attempted through ball to Gerrard is scrambled away from the Bolton box by Cahill.

77 Samuel does well to half Mascherano's run down the right flank with a strong challenge.

75 Bolton will feel unfortunate to be 2-0 down after their performance in this half. They have, however, wasted a few chances and it looks like that could cost them.

74 McCann's powerful effort is stopped by Reina in the centre of his goal.

Goal73 GOAL GERRARD! Torres wins the ball from Andy O'Brien and sends a lofted cross into the Bolton box from the right flank. Gerrard turns the ball into the bottom far corner of Jaaskelainen's goal with a flicked header. Liverpool lead 2-0.

72 Nolan's swerving effort from the right hand angle of the Liverpool box is saved by Reina in the centre of his goal. Bolton need to make their pressure count.

71 Davies' flicked header from close-range is saved with ease by Reina at his left hand post.

70 Torres is caught offside as he looks to run through one-on-one with Jaaskeelainen.

69 Gerrard sends a curving effort narrowly wide of Jaaskeainen's right hand post. Liverpool could find more space in the Bolton half as we near the end of this match.

68 Carragher sends a sliced clearance straight out of play for a Bolton throw-in on the halfway line. Liverpool are not looking happy at the moment.

67 McCann's corner from the left is headed well wide of Reina's far post by Nolan. Bolton are on the front-foot.

66 Reina flaps at a Bolton corner and is lucky Carragher is able to clear the danger. The Liverpool keeper hasn't looked happy dealing with crosses.

65 Steinsson sends a sliced half-volley well wide of Reina's right hand post from long-range. Bolton continue to push for an equaliser.

Yellow Card64 Nolan wasn't happy with that decision and he has been booked by the referee for his protests.

63 Taylor's swerving free-kick from 25 yards is turned over the top of the Liverpool bar by Reina. The referee, however, wrongly awards the away side a goal-kick.

62 Torres' ball across the Bolton six-yard box is somehow turned wide of goal by Gerrard. Liverpool have now missed two simple chances to extend their lead.

61 Gerrard's powerful effort from just inside the Bolton box is blocked by Cahill.

60 Keane doesn't look happy after being taken off but I think it is a sensible move to bring on Torres.

Substitution59 Liverpool make their first change of the match with Torres taking the place of Keane.

58 Aurelio leaves the field after receiving treatment and he will be fine to continue.

57 Liverpool put the ball out of play for a throw-in as Aurelio needs treatment after an aerial challenge with Davies.

56 It looks like Fernando Torres could come on soon as he receives instructions from Rafa Benitez.

55 Bolton have been very impressive at the start of this half. They are battling for the ball and looking to make space in wide areas.

54 Taylor's weak header from 12 yards is easily saved by Reina in the centre of his goal. Busy half for the Liverpool goalkeeper.

53 Riera is knocked to the ground by Steinsson to give Liverpool a free-kick on the halfway line.

52 Gardner storms into the Liverpool box and rounds Reina. The Bolton sub, however, then looses his footing and slices the ball well wide of goal. Bolton should be level.

51 Liverpool manage to scramble the ball away from their penalty area as Elmander looks to striker. Bolton are still on the front-foot.

50 Nolan's rasping free-kick from 30 yards is saved in the centre of his goal by Reina. Liverpool need to half Bolton's early charge in this half.

49 Taylor's corner from the right is cleared from danger by a strong header from Riera at the near post.

48 Elmander sees his stinging half-volley from a tight-angle turned behind for a Bolton corner by Reina. Good start to the half from the home side.

47 McCann's lofted free-kick into the Liverpool box is cleared away from danger by Gerrard.

Substitution46 The second-half is under way and Bolton have made a change at half-time with Ricardo Gardner taking the place of Muamba.

Half TimeHT The referee blows his whistle for half-time. Liverpool deserve their 1-0 lead but Bolton will be frustrated after having a late equaliser ruled out.

45 McCann's corner from the left is header home by Cahill from close-range. The referee, however, has ruled out the goal as Nolan was blocking Reina. It looks like the official was correct with that decision.

45 There will be one minute of additional time.

44 Reina does well to claim Davies' flicked header across the Liverpool six-yard box ahead of the onrushing Elmander.

43 Muamba fails to make space on the edge of the Liverpool box and the away side are able to clear the danger.

42 Reina races out of his goal to clear the ball away from Elmander as the Bolton striker creates space in the Liverpool half.

40 Reina's long ball races out of play for a Bolton goal-kick. Quiet spell in this match at the moment.

39 Keane is caught offside as he looks to run onto Gerrard's through ball. Correct decision.

38 McCann sends another poor pass straight out of play for a Liverpool goal-kick.

37 Liverpool continue to dominate possession. Bolton are not able to keep the ball for long spells at the moment.

36 Gerrard's attempted through ball to Keane is easily cut-out by Cahill. The Bolton defender has had a strong match so far.

35 McCann sends a poor pass over the top of Taylor and the ball races out of play for a Liverpool goal-kick.

34 Agger storms forward and sends a rasping effort wide of Jaaskelainen's left hand post from 30 yards.

33 Liverpool have been firmly on the front-foot since they took the lead. Riera looks like he could have a major role to play in this match from the left flank.

32 Cahill does superbly to outmuscle Keane and win the ball as the Liverpool striker looks to run through one-on-one with Jaaskelainen.

31 Riera tumbles to the ground under a strong challenge from Steinsson but the referee rightly waves play-on.

30 Kuyt's cross across the Bolton six-yard box should be turned home by Keane but the Liverpool striker fails to connect with the ball.

29 Liverpool just about deserve their lead. They have created the better chances so far.

28 GOAL KUYT! Aurelio's lofted cross from the left is turned home by a superb looping header from Kuyt eight yards from the Bolton goal. The ball drifted over the top of Jaaskelainen and into the top right-hand corner of the net.

27 Agger is lucky to win a free-kick as he battles with Davies on the edge of the Liverpool box. There didn't appear to be anything wrong with the Bolton forward's challenge.

26 This has been a very entertaining game so far. Both sides are looking to push forward and are playing at a quick tempo.

24 Liverpool work the resulting corner to Gerrard on the edge of the Bolton box. The Liverpool's captain's shot is easily saved by Jaaskelainen in the centre of his goal.

23 Mascherano's powerful effort from 25 yards is deflected behind for a Liverpool corner.

22 Gerrard plays the ball back to Kuyt just inside the Bolton box. The Liverpool forward sends his effort crashing against the bar and the home side clear the danger.

21 Davies' bustling run down the right flank is halted by a strong challenge from Mascherano.

20 Keane's effort from six yards at a tight angle is easily saved by Jaaskelainen. Both sides are creating chances.

19 Nolan breaks into the Liverpool box but, with plenty of space, he fails to control the ball and allows Reina to stop the danger. Poor play from the Bolton midfielder.

18 Riera's corner from the left is turned well wide of Jaaskelainen's far post by a flicked header from Agger. There is a quick tempo to this game.

17 Hyypia's flicked header across the face of the Bolton six-yard box is cleared away from Daniel Agger by Davies. Great defending from the Bolton striker.

16 Hyypia does well to knock the ball back to Reina under pressure from Fabrice Muamba.

15 Taylor's attempted through ball to Gavin McCann is ushered out of play for a Liverpool goal-kick by Alonso.

14 Nolan's driven effort from 25 yards is saved with ease in the centre of his goal by Reina. Both sides are creating chances.

13 Keane's attempted pass to Riera is blocked by the referee and Bolton are able to win the ball. The Liverpool striker is not happy.

12 Albert Riera cuts in from the left flank and sees his driven effort blocked by Cahill on the edge of his six-yard box. Liverpool are on the front-foot.

11 Xabi Alonso's pass to Jamie Carragher down the right flank evades the Liverpool right-back and goes out of play for a goal-kick.

10 Liverpool are in charge of this game at the moment. They are keeping the ball with ease and looking to get Gerrard more involved in the match.

9 Steven Gerrard's free-kick from the right flank is cleared away from danger by a powerful header from Gary Cahill.

9 Dirk Kuyt is bundled to the ground by a late challenge from Jlloyd Samuel to give Liverpool a free-kick on the right flank.

8 Kevin Davies' driven cross from the right is claimed with ease by Reina on the edge of his six-yard box. Both sides are looking to work the ball down the flanks.

7 Gretar Steinsson's looping cross from the right is cleared away from danger by a flicked header from Sami Hyypia.

6 Fabio Aurelio does really well to intercept Elmander's attempted through ball to Taylor and take the ball away from danger.

5 Matt Taylor cuts in from the left flank and sends a driven effort narrowly wide of Reina's left hand post. Bright start to this game.

4 Jussi Jaaskelainen races out of his goal to claim a through ball ahead of the onrushing Robbie Keane.

3 Liverpool are in charge of the ball after Bolton's bright start. No major chances for either side yet.

2 Johan Elmader's cross from the right is claimed with ease on the edge of his six-yard box by Jose Reina. Bright start from Bolton.

1 The action is under way. Javier Mascherano has won an early free-kick after being bundled to the ground by Kevin Nolan.

LIVERPOOL

Subs - Carragher, Gulacsi, Insua, Riera, Alonso, Darby, Benayoun

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Subs - Sanchez, Gunter, Rocha, Modric, Bent, Boateng, Bentley

Referee : Mike Riley

90+9 And it's all over. It's been a rollercoaster ride but Spurs are in the quarter-finals and on the balance of play they deserve it. Liverpool have come back into things in the second half as expected but Spurs have always looked dangerous going forward.

90+9 Insua's deflected cross falls kindly for Cesar.

90+8 I hardly dare say it but it looks like Spurs are there now - the quarter-finals await.

90+7 Great stuff from Boateng with tricks and flicks leaving Liverpool players in his wake, eventually forcing a corner.

90+6 Boateng appears to run into the back of Babel but somehow earns himself a free-kick.

90+6 Liverpool dominating possession in added time but they're struggling to break Spurs down.

Substitution90+6 Spurs' other two-goal striker Pavlyuchenko makes way this time, with Kevin-Prince Boateng his replacement.

90+5 Babel fires in a shot from distance but it's well wide.

90+5 Zokora like a Duracell bunny here - we're 95 minutes into this one and he's still sprinting back and forth.

90+4 Alonso clips what looks a decent ball in to Ngog but the big striker opts to flick it on rather than control and Spurs clear.

Substitution90+3 Here is Bent - and it's two-goal Campbell who makes way to a great ovation from the Spurs fans.

90+2 Darren Bent on his way for Tottenham.

90+1 Lovely link play from O'Hara and Huddlestone down the inside left channel, with the latter opting to shoot with a looping effort from distance. It sails wide.

90 There's going to be some nine minutes of added time. Don't go anywhere (yet).

90 El Zhar and Ngog look to link up on the edge of the Tottenham box and Corluka hurriedly lashes it behind for a corner.

89 Spurs just looked to have stablised things at the back after Liverpool turned up the heat there.

88 Ngog down but it looks to be little more than a touch of cramp.

87 Good news out of the Spurs physio room - apparently Gomes never lost conciousness and may not even need to go to hospital.

86 Spurs think they've forced another corner, but referee Riley awards a Liverpool goal-kick.

86 O'Hara's corner is headed clear by Agger under pressure from Dawson.

85 Lennon sprints down the right but Hyypia stands firm this time and blocks it behind for a corner. If only he'd have done that to Campbell in the lead-up to Spurs' opener.

Substitution84 Liverpool bring youngster Stephen Darby on for Degen to make his first-team debut.

83 Just managed to grab a glance at the Liverpool penalty appeal and it looks like a spot-kick to me.

82 Liverpool unsurprisingly pressing - and they're doing so with some quality at the moment. We could be on for a grandstand finish, particularly as there's plenty of injury time to be added.

81 Degen skips into the Tottenham box down the right and goes down under pressure from a sliding Bale tackle. The Liverpool players and fans appeal for a penalty, but referee Riley waves it away. Expect we'll hear more about that one...

80 Pavlyuchenko batters in a shot after a lovely flick from Campbell, but Cavalieri is equal to the task and parries it.

79 Free-kick to Spurs around 30 yards out which O'Hara whips in. For some reason Campbell is in five yards of space centrally (again) but unfortunately for Spurs the ball sails over him.

78 Liverpool spring forward on the counter-attack but Cesar gets his first touch as Lucas' efforts to get a shot away end with the ball dribbling through to the Spurs goalkeeper.

77 Huddlestone powers through a couple of challenges before Dossena clatters into him. With Spurs still in possession, albeit 10 yards back, referee Riley waves play on and the attack peters out.

76 The corner eventually drops to Huddlestone around 25 yards out on an angle but his curling drive dips and swirls just wide of the target.

75 Spurs on the attack as soon as play resumes with Liverpool sloppy in possession and Alonso has to slide in on Campbell to concede a corner.

Substitution74 Cesar's on. We're looking at five minutes of injury time at least now.

73 Gomes makes his way off the field on the stretcher, with a warm ovation ringing around the stadium and the Liverpool fans playing their part.

72 Understandably they're taking their time to get Gomes loaded onto the stretcher.

71 Cesar Sanchez preparing to make his debut for Spurs - not in the best of circumstances, it has to be said.

70 The Spurs physio and paramedics are on quickly and despite initial fears Gomes had swallowed his tongue he's now lying on his back.

69 Lucas slides a lovely ball down the inside-right channel which Degen looks to latch onto. Gomes comes out quickly and pushes the ball away. Good goalkeeping. He's stayed down, though, and this looks a nasty one.

68 Spurs suddenly look rattled now. This game is far from over.

67 Nice link play from Liverpool presents El Zhar with a shooting opportunity 20 yards out. Gomes spills it but as hearts are in mouths from the Tottenham faithful he gathers at the second attempt.

Substitution66 Alonso replaces Plessis.

Yellow Card65 Lucas booked for a lunging challenge. He can have no complaints at being the sixth man booked tonight.

64 Does Rafa fancy this now? Xabi Alonso is on his way which suggests he just might think Liverpool have a chance.

Goal63 GOAL - HYYPIA. It's another from a Liverpool corner - and again Gomes is culpable as Hyypia climbs for a routine header to score. Gomes came for it but his attempted punch was nowhere near the ball as he was behind Hyypia.

62 El Zhar does superbly to work himself a yard of space by skipping past four Spurs defenders before sliding it out to Insua. His shot is heading somewhere near the corner flag but does earn Liverpool a corner as it's deflected behind.

61 Spurs fans giving it the 'oles' now.

60 A rare bad pass from Huddlestone comes to nothing as Insua tries to slide it through but Dawson intercepts. I've said it before, I'll say it again - Dawson has been brilliant tonight.

59 Huddlestone attacks the corner with his not inconsiderable bulk but it drops wide. Riley's spotted an infringement anyway.

58 Zokora typifies Spurs' performance as he nicks in to win the ball back then powers down the right before cutting back to Lennon, who wins a corner form the Londoners. Great stuff.

57 Plenty of Tottenham fans gleefully pointing out that their team isn't exactly a first-choice one. Whatever, it's a belting game.

Substitution56 First change of the night is from Liverpool, with Torres - who has seen little of the ball all night - making way for Insua.

55 The corner is eventually worked into the box and Campbell heads against the post, but he was offside in any case. Even so, it's terrible defending from Liverpool.

54 Free-kick to Spurs in a dangerous area as Pavlyuchenko is brought down. Bale steps up and curls in the free-kick, which deflects behind for a corner.

53 What drama. Liverpool have definitely picked things up in the attacking third since the break, but their defence look as poor as in the first 45.

Goal52 GOAL - PAVLYUCHENKO. I'm running out of superlatives it's five goals in 14 minutes of playing time as Zokora powers into the Liverpool box down the left and his deflected cross-shot falls to Pavlyuchenko, who can't miss.

51 Lovely play from Huddlestone to nick the ball away from Lucas but he blows the chance to slide in Pavlyuchenko.

50 Spurs fans are up in arms as Campbell goes down in the corner under pressure from Degen, but the referee waves play on.

Goal49 GOAL - PLESSIS. Is the unlikely comeback on? The corner comes in from the right and Gomes is culpable as Plessis heads home at the back post. Gomes came for it, then decided to stay at home, then probably should have saved it anyway.

48 Definitely brighter from Liverpool in the second half, but that's to be expected. Another corner to them down the right now.

47 The corner comes to nothing but there's concern from Spurs as Huddlestone stays down...before clambering back to his feet. He trots off smiling with referee Riley so obviously isn't too badly injured.

46 No changes from either side at the break - in personnel anyway - but Liverpool look more fired up early in the half as Torres forces a corner down the left.

45 Liverpool get us back under way.

That's half-time. With seven minutes left until the break I was thinking of speculating as whether it would be a complete reversal of the recent league game with Spurs dominating this time and Liverpool winning but I can't see that happening now.

Yellow Card45 Campbell was booked for his celebration. Ridiculous.

Goal45 GOAL - CAMPBELL. What a night this is turning into. Lennon dinks a ball in from the left and Campbell somehow manages to find two yards of space inside the Liverpool six-yard box to head home. Dreadful defending from Dossena this time. Spurs deserve to lead but Liverpool have helped them along the way.

44 Corner to Spurs - their fans are buzzing and understandably so.

43 Quite incredible. Spurs have certainly deserved it, though, and we'll get a clear sign now as to just how much Rafa Benitez wants to win this competition. Will we see the likes of Riera and Benayoun at the break?

Goal42 GOAL - CAMPBELL. What drama! It's 2-0 Spurs and Liverpool are reeling. O'Hara clips what looks little more than a hopeful ball into the Liverpool box and Cavalieri inexplicably comes out, clatters into Degen and presents the ball to Campbell, who can't miss...but nearly does.

Yellow Card41 Got a bit spicy here now - Pavlyuchenko's in the book for a classic forward's tackle on Agger.

Yellow Card40 Torres also booked for waving an imaginary card.

Yellow Card40 Babel goes into the book as he shows clear dissent after a foul on Lennon. Pretty innocuous challenge to be honest, but his reaction was certainly worthy of a booking.

39 Liverpool on the ropes here as O'Hara bursts into the inside left channel and blasts a shot in which Cavalieri parries.

Goal38 GOAL - PAVLYUCHENKO. It's 1-0 Spurs and you have to say it's been coming since about the second minute. It's Campbell with the assist as he skips down the left and evades Hyypia all too easily to cut the ball back for Pavlyuchenko to net unmarked from 12 yards out. Poor defending from Liverpool.

37 Spurs definitely on top here. Liverpool just can't seem to get the ball down and play.

36 Great control from Lennon to kill the ball dead at his feet but his subsequent ball into the box isn't the best and drifts behind despite O'Hara's best efforts.

35 Dawson in smartly to halt Torres as he turns sharply 40 yards from the Tottenham goal. 'El Nino' has hardly seen any of the ball here.

34 Steve Smith questions whether Peter Wivell is watching the same game as him. Have to say, I've been really impressed with Spurs' efforts so far - they're much the better side.

33 Symptomatic of Tottenham's efforts so far as Lennon closes down first Dossena then Agger to force a mistake. It's about a yard in front of Benitez and he has a face like thunder.

32 Huddlestone slides a ball out towards Hutton but Campbell intervenes. He then realises the error of his ways and tries to knock it on to the overlapping right-back but just overhits it and it drifts behind for a Liverpool goal-kick.

31 Gesticulation aplenty from Benitez down in the Liverpool technical area - usually a sign things aren't going well.

30 Lucas shows his strength to bulldoze through Corluka's challenge but then finds Dawson impassable and Spurs spring forward, causing Agger to have to be alert to concede a throw.

29 Huddlestone flicks a ball from Bale into the Liverpool box but Campbell just can't get enough on it and Cavalieri gathers at the second attempt.

28 The Liverpool fans are making themselves heard - but it's not transmitted to the players yet. This time another attempted attack falters as Cavalieri's long ball sails straight through to Gomes.

27 Peter Wivell evidently isn't impressed with either Spurs' line-up (or their efforts early on). He writes: "This is clearly Spurs' only route into Europe this year, you would think they would try a little harder."

26 After good work from Huddlestone, Bale whacks in a cross from the left, but it sails over the two Spurs strikers and out for a Liverpool throw.

25 Liverpool offering very little going forward here - credit to Spurs, though, they're hassling and harrying whenever the Reds are on the ball.

24 Campbell tries to spring the Liverpool offside trap but again the flag goes up. Looked a tight one at first glance.

23 Bale is caught in possession on halfway but Ngog's ball in from the right is lamentable and Dawson is in quickly to nick it away. Really impressed with Dawson tonight - he's knocking 40-yard balls around the field and carrying it out of defence well.

22 Tottenham only just edging the possession stats thus far, but they've looked by far the more dangerous with the ball.

21 Campbell breaks clear of the Liverpool backline but as he eyes up a lob over the onrushing Cavalieri's head, the assistant referee's flag goes up for offside.

20 The corner comes to nothing but it's definitely Spurs on the front foot here - Liverpool struggling to get any real possession and Spurs hassling their men from front to back.

19 Great stuff from Spurs. Lovely ball from the left from Bale falls at the feet of Lennon. He clips the ball past Dossena with a lovely flick and lashes in a shot but Agger flings himself in the way to block. Corner to Spurs.

18 Spurs getting really tight to the Liverpool frontmen - this time it's Dawson in quickly to nick the ball off Ngog's toes.

17 Torres tries to spin away from Corluka around 35 yards out to work a shooting opportunity but the Spurs man marshalls the Spaniard superbly and clears down the left.

16 Rafa Benitez isn't looking too chuffed down on the Liverpool bench - well, I say bench but he's up and down into the technical area.

15 Spurs content just to knock the ball around knowing they've had the best of the early stages here. Liverpool's most likely outlet looks to be Babel, with Torres just lacking a little sharpness by the look of it.

14 Gerschwin Langeveldt has got his priorities right - he's "supposed to be studying for my Cima exams on Tuesday but following the the match commentary". As a Liverpool fan he's hoping "the boys do us proud".

13 Huddlestone clips what looks initially to be a lovely ball through to Campbell but it skips just a bit too far and though the frontman latches onto it he can't find a team-mate and Liverpool clear.

12 Lennon batters in a cross from the right but it's a terrible ball and sails straight out for a Liverpool throw. That needed a bit of subtlety from the winger.

11 Again, it's only a half-clearance from Liverpool and Tottenham work it back to O'Hara. Again he sends in the cross which Pavlyuchenko this time opts to head towards Campbell. Great defending from Hyypia, though, as he shepherds Campbell away from the ball. Spurs fans appeal for a penalty, but even their players aren't interested.

10 Much better ball in from O'Hara this time but Plessis redeems himself by climbing higher than Pavlyuchenko to clear.

Yellow Card9 O'Hara has a good crossing opportunity from the left but it's a poor ball and is easily dealt with. Liverpool only half-clear it, though, and when Campbell picks it up Plessis jumps into the tackle and is rightly booked.

8 Babel makes a brilliant run down the left and skips into the Tottenham box before slipping it to Torres. He just can't get it under control and is forced wide, eventually knocking it out of play. Looks like Raymond Delauney was right - Babel looking really lively here in the early stages.

7 Torres gets a flick to a long punt forward from Cavalieri but Ngog just can't latch onto it and it slips behind for a goal-kick.

6 Huddlestone clips the ball in behind for Campbell to race onto down the inside-right channel but Cavalieri is out quickly to gather.

5 Liverpool used Hyypia as an off-the-ball blocker there. Sadly for them it didn't work - and the fact Zokora went down holding his stomach on the edge of the box after being blatantly blocked off suggests Mike Riley will be onto it.

4 Lucas gets a decent flick to the near-post corner but it sails out to the wing and Spurs clear beyond the back post.

4 Bright start here - Liverpool have turned defence into attack in the blink of an eye, with Babel forcing a corner down the left.

3 Spurs looking to get Lennon into the game here as much as they can. This time he whips a dangerous ball in from the right but Pavlyuchenko doesn't get enough on his header and it skips away for a Liverpool throw. Should have done better.

2 A bout of head tennis ends with Babel weaving down the left and laying it on to Dossena. He lashes a cross into the box but that man Ngog is penalised and Spurs clear with a free-kick.

1 Spurs straight on the attack with Lennon looking lively before sliding it in to Zokora. No-nonsense stuff from the Liverpool backline, though, as Hyypia hacks clear.

0 We're under way at White Hart Lane. Keep your thoughts coming during the half - I'll aim to publish the best at half-time and might drop a few in along the way if the action dries up.

live commentary from skysports.com

90+3 The referee brings the match to an end and Liverpool reclaim top spot in the Premier League.

90+3 GOAL ARBELOA: The third goal has come from a Spaniard, but it's not Torres! Mascherano threads the ball through for Kuyt. The Dutchman pokes the ball into the area and Arbeloa is on the end of it. He runs onto the pass and curls the ball past Carson to complete a convincing win.

90+2 Liverpool's trademark anthem is ringing out at Anfield now.

90+1 The Baggies attack again and again Agger stands firm

90 Corner for West Brom - and it's all thanks to Koren's clever run from deep. Agger heads away the delivery from Brunt as the Reds edge towards the three points.

Yellow Card89 Mascherano slides in on Robinson and gets none of the ball. The midfielder is booked for this rash challenge.

88 Teixeira does well close to the byline, after a sensational pass from Moore, before Carragher recovers.

87 Kuyt's snap-shot is poor and well off target. He had some space there and probably should have done better.

86 Mascherano passes to Benayoun on the overlap. His cross flies across the face of goal and moments later he is at it again, but his pass falls just short of Torres on the edge of the box.

85 Brunt's corner is poor and the Reds can clear their lines.

84 Substitutes Moore and Brunt make headway down the left and the latter wins a corner.

83 Liverpool carve their way through West Brom. Kuyt and Torres share a one-two and Torres sends the ball out wide to Babel. The Dutchman flies past his marker and crosses for Kuyt, who just can't direct his shot on target.

82 A goal now for the Baggies would really set-up a grandstand finish here at Anfield.

81 Torres looks to take on Zuiverloon, who stands up well and blocks his run.

Substitution80 Gerrard makes way for Alonso as Benitez exhausts his options on the bench.

79 Benayoun receives the ball in central midfield and looks up. He arches a lovely ball through the middle for Torres. The Spanish star gets his shot away, but it flies straight into Carson's chest.

78 Zuiverloon looks very sketchy at right-back and Liverpool are looking to exploit that weakness.

77 Xabi Alonso is warming up now as Benitez ponders a third change.

76 Koren fires in a great cross and Reina gathers it as he dives forward. Good goalkeeping. Torres gets into the game for the first time and runs at the defence. He looks a tad rusty and gives the ball away.

75 Liverpool move forward in a red wave. Torres is open in the box and Kuyt moves into space down the left before the touch judge raises his flag for offiside.

74 Kuyt chases a long ball and Donk plays safe and knocks it out for a throw-in.

73 Still no way through for the Baggies. If the scoreline stays the same they will remain in the drop zone while Liverpool will reclaim top spot.

72 Keane gets a standing ovation from Anfield as he is subbed, but Torres gets an even louder cheer as he makes his long-awaited comeback from injury.

71 Brunt's impact is immediate and he fires in a rocket of a shot that just nicks the side-netting.

Substitution71 West Brom counter and Mascherano commits a cynical foul. Chris Brunt makes his entrance and Miller comes off.

70 Benayoun then turns but his square ball seeking Keane is intercepted.

69 Aurelio dispossesses Zuiverloon and finds Kuyt is lurking on the edge of the area. The Dutchman tries to find Benayoun but over-hits his pass.

68 There are a lot of bodies in the middle third which has led to a scrappy period.

Yellow Card67 Arbeloa is yellow carded for a silly foul and West Brom have a free-kick. Liverpool deal with the set-piece quite easily and clear their lines.

66 The Dutchman takes on Zuiverloon and bursts past his compatriot. His cross is cleared.

Substitution65 West Brom struggle to get hold of the ball and the Reds are content to pass the ball around in their own half. Riera gets a good reception from the faithful as he comes off for Babel.

64 Benitez is preparing to bring Ryan Babel onto the pitch. There's still no sign of Fernando Torres, however.

63 Agger slides in and concedes a corner off Robinson's cross. Gerrard heads the ball out for another corner.

62 Liverpool have upped the tempo as the seek the killer blow.

61 Gerrard is seeing more of the ball. Keane turns Donk inside-out again and the attack peters out when Riera comes into the equation.

60 Donk makes an error and fails to clear the ball in the area. Keane latches onto the ball and attempts to turn him but Carson comes to the rescue before he can pull the trigger.

59 Kuyt and Gerrard's movement makes some space and the England midfielder stabs the ball through for Keane. The linesman, however, ruled that Keane is marginally offside.

58 Agger and Carragher fail to mark Miller who advances into the area and chases Olsson's pass. A let off there for the Reds as the striker can't reach the ball.

57 Riera dribbles past Zuiverloon and he delivers a good cross from the right. Keane and Kuyt attack the ball and Robinson stands firm.

Substitution56 Bednar is withdrawn for Moore and Kim makes way for Filipe Teixeira.

55 Kuyt plays Riera into the area and the winger goes down under a heavy challenge in front of the Kop - who appeal for a penalty. The ref waves play on.

54 Luke Moore is warming up for West Brom.

53 Keane drops deep and combines well with Riera. The striker appeared to be impeded but play goes on. Koren then creates something out of nothing and dribbles past three players before shooting wide.

52 Greening's shot is saved by Reina and Kuyt drifts out onto the right on the counter and sends in an awkward cross. Benayoun can't reach it and the Baggies look to build from the back.

51 Gerrard again gives the ball away after Mascherano's 50 yard run brought the ball out of Liverpool's half.

50 It's been a bright start for Liverpool until Gerrard, yes Gerrard, makes an error and gives the ball away just outside the West Brom area.

49 Liverpool swing the ball out to Riera on the right. Unfortunately for him he let's the ball roll out for a goal-kick.

48 Kuyt and Keane play a nifty one two before freeing Arbeloa down the right. Keane is again involved following a throw-in on the right.

47 Aurelio concedes a throw-in after coming under pressure from Miller. Greening's cross is cleared by Mascherano, whose positioning is perfect.

46 Kuyt shows good feet and passes to Benayoun. His clever pass finds Keane whose movement off the ball is hurting West Brom.

46 Liverpool kick-off the second half and Keane will have hopes of bagging an Anfield hat-trick.

45+1 Keane tries a give and go with Kuyt, it fails to come off and the ref ends the first half. Mowbray will be furious that his charges failed to make more of the good spell they had in the opening half hour. Liverpool fans, meanwhile, must be delighted that Keane has finally come good in the Premier League.

45 There will be just one minute of added time.

44 Riera goes down with a knock and implores the ref to dish out some yellow cards.

Goal43 GOAL KEANE: Liverpool counter from the West Brom corner. Aurelio's beautiful pass from the left splits open the Albion defence and Keane beats the offside trap. The striker then rounds the advancing Carson with his first touch before calmly knocking the ball into the back of the net with his second.

42 Miller slips away from Aurelio on the right and drives into the area. His cross is too close to Reina, but the goalkeeper fumbles the ball and concedes a corner.

41 Agger builds from the back and Gerrard finds Aurelio down the left. Riera though plays the ball back to Carragher.

40 Rafa Benitez will be much happier with his side's performance in the last five-10 minutes.

39 Aurelio's outswinger finds Kuyt one the edge of the area. The ball gets stuck under his feet and he shows good vision to lay the ball back for Mascherano - his shot is weak and is easily gathered by Carson.

38 It's all Liverpool now. Keane wins another corner for the Reds.

37 Mascherano plays an uncharacteristically good ball to Benayoun and he crosses into the area. The ball comes to Riera, but the Spaniard hesitates and fails to get a shot in.

36 The Liverpool number 7 is in the thick of the action. He drives forward into space down the right channel. Unfortunately for the Reds, his final ball does not match his finish a minute earlier.

Goal35 GOAL KEANE. The former Spurs man breaks his league duck with a brilliant left-footed finish. Liverpool ran some great angles as Aurelio passed inside for Gerrard who then threaded the ball between West Brom's two central defenders and Keane was on the end of it all

33 The home support cheers loudly as Carson slices his kick out for a throw-in. Aurelio then finds space down the left. The Brazilian's delivery is disappointing as he over-hits his cross.

32 Gerrard combines well with Riera before the ball runs out for a throw-in. Albion hit the ball long for Bednar and the ref rules that the Czech has fouled Carragher.

31 Anfield is very quiet as Liverpool struggle to find a way through the Baggies' defence.

29 Liverpool scythe through the West Brom defence and Gerrard plays a lovely ball for Benayoun. The little midfielder shoots and Carson saves, but the ball rebounds onto Olsson's hand. Benayoun and co. are convinced it is a penalty. Not given by the ref.

28 Riera goes down as he is outmuscled by Zuiverloon from Reina's goal-kick. To his credit the winger gets on with things and does not appeal for a foul

27 Bednar wins a corner which is whipped in quickly. Benayoun is well placed to clear the ball.

26 Reina's long-ball falls to Keane who concedes a free-kick, much to the chagrin of the player and Anfield.

25 Arbeloa then moves down the opposite flank and threads the ball in for Kuyt. The ball is just out of the Dutch striker's reach though.

24 A scrappy period in midfield ends as Aurelio finds Keane on the left. The Irish striker spins off his marker and cuts the ball back for Kuyt. A West Brom defender intervenes to end a dangerous attack.

22 Some great one-touch football from Liverpool. Kuyt finds Riera who nearly plays Keane through on goal. That's better from the Reds.

21 Kim has acres of space down the left and fails to make anything of it and Mascherano slides in with a great tackle.

20 Replays from Albion's attacks a couple of minutes earlier show that Carragher may have fouled Koren in the area. Of course no penalty was awarded.

19 Kuyt makes a nuisance of himself just outside of the area. The Dutchman has three team-mates to pick out but somehow manages to knock the ball too long.

Yellow Card18 Miller draws a foul off Daniel Agger. Greening's through ball opens up the Liverpool defence and luckily for the home side Robert Koren fails to make contact with the ball while in a good area. Greening then fouls Kuyt and picks up a booking for his efforts.

17 Albion play a short corner and Arbeloa clears before the Reds win a goal-kick.

16 Donk's back pass almost sells Carson short and again Liverpool are piling the pressure on West Brom. Miller finds space in the area on the counter and he wins a corner

15 Fabio Aurelio bends the corner in and Zuiverloon does well to clear the danger.

14 Yossi Benayoun pressurises Greening into an error and the Israeli nicks the ball before winning a corner.

13 Albion are nearly caught out as Robbie Keane's first-time shot is on target. Carson makes a neat save, but Tony Mowbray will be worried about how much space Kuyt, Riera and Arbeloa had in the builld-up.

12 The game has been relatively scrappy thus far as Liverpool are content to sit back.

11 Liverpool press up and West Brom play the ball back to Carson.

10 West Brom are looking to use Bednar and Miller's muscle up front. But Liverpool counter through captain Steven Gerrard and he attempts to make an impact by driving forward before hitting a tame shot by his standards.

9 The home side stroke the ball about in their own half before Albert Riera moves forward and wins a throw-in. Mascherano shows that he is a holding midfielder and not a creator by over-hitting his cross from the right.

8 Javier Mascherano looks to outmuscle Bednar but the Argentine concedes a free-kick. Jonathan Greening fails to do much with the set-piece and Alvaro Arbeloa cleans up.

7 Zuiverloon over-hits his cross in a promising area. Albion have looked good so far while Liverpool have failed to get into the game.

5 Paul Robinson wins a free-kick for the visitors and former Reds goalkeeper Scott Carson bombs a long one for Ishmael Miller.

4 Gianni Zuiverloon plays the ball back before Ryan Donk hits a long ball forward.

3 Dirk Kuyt chases a long ball as Liverpool probe into West Brom's half for the first time.

2 A bright start here for the hosts who have enjoyed a fair amount of possession in the opening phase of the match.

1 Kim Do-Heon wins a throw in for the Baggies and then Roman Bednar wins another.

1 West Brom kick-off at Anfield with the hope of moving out of the relegation zone.

0 Fernando Torres is on the bench for Liverpool after missing six matches due to a hamstring injury. Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has rested midfielder Xabi Alonso by naming him as a substitute and brought in Yossi Benayoun as the only change from the side that drew with Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday.

West Brom, in need of an improvement in their away form, have included Do-heon Kim.at James Morrison's expense.

90 Finally Atletico get the game restarted to the referee's satisfaction and seconds later the final whistle goes. Liverpool have snatched a late, late point here so it's as you were at the top of the group. Liverpool certainly merited at the very least a point from this one, but the manner of their equaliser was hugely controversial: having been denied a clear penalty earlier in the half, Liverpool were given a very dodgy one and Gerrard converted.

Yellow Card90 Another booking for an Atletico player. This time it's for Aguero, who whacks the kick-off straight over the Liverpool crossbar. It's chaos here.

Yellow Card90 There will barely be time for Atletico to restart the game. There are 95 minutes on the clock, and both Pernia and Heitinga have been booked for their protests.

Penalty Goal90 Gerrard sends Franco the wrong way and brings Liverpool level.

Penalty Given90 Penalty for Liverpool, and it's very, very soft. Pernia and Gerrard jump for the ball, and Gerrard goes down. The linesman, who failed to spot a clear handball earlier, this time does signal for a penalty, and Gerrard will now have a late, late chance to salvage a point.

90 Aguero is penalised for a foul on Agger and Liverpool can again whack the ball forward with two added minutes still to play.

90 Cracking ball across the ball from Gerrard, but Ngog can't get on the end of it and Kuyt at the back post can't manage to head the ball back across goal.

90 Lucas heads tamely into Franco's arms from a long way out as the fourth official indicates four added minutes at the end of this one.

Substitution90 Luis Garcia comes on for Atletico in place of Simao, and the 2005 Champions League winner gets a huge avation from the Liverpool support.

89 The free-kick is headed back across goal for Ngog, but he's penalised for a foul on his marker.

88 Arbeloa is blocked off by Pernia and Liverpool have a free-kick on the right-hand side. Silly foul from Pernia, with Garcia on hand to pick up possession in any case.

87 The corner is cleared Three-and-a-half minutes plus stoppage time for Liverpool to take something from this game.

86 Carragher cuts inside his defender onto his left foot and fires in a decent left-foot effort that Franco has to tip over the bar for a corner.

85 A grimacing Agger is back on the field with two fingers strapped together.

84 Agger goes to ground under pressure from Aguero, and seems to have hurt his finger. Might be a dislocation. He goes off to be treated by the physio, while the director treats us to a lovely close-up.

83 Another good chance for Agger, his third of the half. The corner clears the players massed at the near post and reaches an unmarked Agger who can only head the ball wide.

83 Lovely skill from Ngog on the right takes him away from his marker, but he goes for goal from a tight angle when he would have been far better off crossing the ball for Kuyt.

82 Perea gets the corner clear, and you have to admire the resilience of the Spanish side. They've held Liverpool off pretty well in this second half.

81 The free-kick is aimed at the back post where Gerrard is unmarked. He heads the ball back across goal but Perea gets it behind for a corner.

81 Liverpool have a free-kick on the left, but it's delayed because the referee wants a word with Pernia about holding Kuyt.

80 Ngog gets his head to Aurelio's cross from the left, but puts his header into the Kop. No more than a half-chance.

79 Liverpool get the corner clear, but they are starting to run out of time.

79 Maniche crosses low from the right, and a sliding Carragher diverts it behind for a corner. The ball bounced off his knee and onto his hand, prompting Maniche to scream for a spot-kick. He has to settle for a corner.

78 A neat touch from Kuyt plays in Ngog but his touch lets him down and Pernia clears.

78 Gerrard finds some space on the right, but a heavy first touch allows Pernia to get a foot in and prevent the cross coming in.

Substitution77 Lucas replaces Mascherano for the home side.

77 The corner is cleared, and Liverpool are lining up another change.

76 Perea's mistake lets in Mascherano, but the Atletico man recovers to concede a corner.

75 Aguero finds Garcia on the left, but his low cross is easily cleared.

74 Marseille lead 3-0 in the group's other game. So victory here for either side will secure qualification. For all Liverpool's dominance, at the moment that's more likely to be Atletico.

73 Aguero shows his class to bring the ball down the right for Atletico and shake off a couple of Liverpool challenges before eventually being shackled by red shirts.

72 Ngog's first touch almost embarrasses Franco, but he gathers the ball safely enough under his crossbar.

Substitution71 Change for each side. That pass to Gerrard was Keane' last action - he makes way for Ngog. For Atletico, Aguero replaces Forlan. Something else for Liverpool to worry about. Keane looks pretty disappointed to be withdrawn.

70 Liverpool almost score a sensational goal. Gerrard flicks the ball to Keane who plays the ball straight back into his captain's path. From 18 yards out you expect the net to bulge, but Gerrard side-foots the ball over the bar.

69 Neat interplay between Babel and Arbeloa on the right before the ball is squared to Gerrard. He tries to play in Kuyt but just overhits it. Kuyt slides to try and keep the ball in but doesn't succeed.

68 Aurelio's corner doesn't beat the first man, Forlan.

68 Alonso swings the ball in to the far post, where Kuyt tries to head the ball back across goal but it comes off Lopez for a corner.

Yellow Card67 First booking of the night as Maniche flies into a challenge on Alonso.

65 Babel tries to get round Lopez on the left but has to settle for a throw.

64 Aurelio's corner is cleared back out to him. His cross back into the box loops high but is then nodded down to Agger, who swivels and volleys straight at Franco. Better contact and that would surely have been 1-1.

64 Assuncao heads behind nervously for a corner. As things stand, Atletico will seal their place in the knockout stages tonight.

63 Gerrard volleys over the bar from 25 yards. Again, he had a bit more time than he realised there.

62 Ryan Babel comes on in place of Riera as Liverpool chase an equaliser.

61 This game's ridiculously open now. Kuyt tries to play in Gerrard on the right but the Liverpool captain is just offside.

60 Franco punches Gerrard's corner clear and suddenly there's a break on for Atletico. Forlan sprints down the left, but Mascherano gets back to block his cross.

59 Kuyt wins a corner on the right. Looking at the replays, that one should probably have been a goal-kick. Fair to say the linesman isn't having the best night.

58 Rare forward foray from Atletico, but Forlan's pass is intercepted by Agger.

57 Aurelio whips the ball in beautifully, and Agger beats the keeper to the ball but can only put his header onto the roof of the net.

56 Ironic cheers from the Kop as the linesman does give handball against Pernia after Kuyt flicks the ball up into his arm. Far less clear cut than the earlier penalty shout, but this time the offence is spotted and a free-kick given.

55 Gerrard tries to get to a long ball over the top on the left. He does so, but the ball goes behind. Tougher decision this time, but the replays again suggest that should have been a corner but a goal-kick was given.

54 Another poor decision from the officials. Perea tries to shepherd the ball behind for a goal-kick under pressure from Kuyt, but clearly gets the final touch. But a goal-kick is given to the dismay of the Kop.

53 Gerrard tries to angle the ball through for Keane, but Perea intercepts and just boots the ball upfield to safety. Liverpool all over the visitors here.

52 Liverpool trying to pass their way through a disciplined Atletico defence but they can't quite pick a path yet.

51 Massive moment in this game. Keane chests down Arbeloa's cross from the right, and Perea clearly handles the ball before clearing. The Liverpool players scream for a penalty but get nothing. The referee was perhaps the wrong side of the defender to see it, but the linesman was perfectly placed and gave nothing.

50 Maxi tees up Forlan, but his 25-yard effort dribbles through to Reina.

49 Pernia knocks the corner clear, and Simao does well to bring the ball clear. He plays the ball inside for the onrushing Pernia who tries and fails to pick out Maniche. Another warning there of the speed with which Atletico can spring from defence.

48 Heitinga does well to get to Gerrard's ball before Keane. Assuncao hacks the ball into the Kop for a corner. Up goes the voume.

48 Liverpool dominating possession at the start of this second half. This might be the pattern now: Liverpool having the ball, and Atletico looking to hit again on the counter.

47 Alonso picks out a neat pass for Mascherano, but just as it looks like things will open up for the Argentine Perea gets across to make a superb block.

46 Liverpool get the second half under way looking to overturn their 1-0 deficit.

Half Time45 And the half-time whistle does blow. It's been a highly watchable first half, but Liverpool have work to do in the second period after that fine goal from Maxi. Send your thoughts on the state of play to dave.tickner@bskyb.com

45 The last chance of the first half has probably gone for Liverpool as Kuyt's cross is safely gathered in by Franco.

45 There will be a single minute of added time at the end of an entertaining first half at Anfield.

44 Gerrard's ball in from the right is a good one, but Heitinga makes a fine headed clearance. The ball comes back into the Atletico box, but Heitinga again is on hand to clear. This time with his right foot and with rather more finality.

44 Perea fouls Kuyt, and Liverpool have a free-kick in a promising position on the right-hand side.

43 Gerrard tries to force a mistake out of Perea, but the Atletico defender keeps his cool and completes the clearance.

42 Arbeloa tidies up at the back after a long ball over the top keeps Pernia interested.

41 Arbeloa tries to play the ball inside for Kuyt on the right, but it's easily cleared.

39 Alonso goes for goal from distance, but it's comfortable for Franco.

38 Shades of White Hart Lane for the Liverpool fans. They've created a stack of chances, but fallen for a sucker-punch. The difference, of course, is that Liverpool have plenty of time to turn this one round.

Goal37 GOAL - MAXI. Liverpool are behind after a stunning counter-attack. Heitinga plays a wonderful ball over the top for Lopez, whose first touch is perfection. He's in behind the defence on the right and cuts the ball back for Maxi. His first touch takes him past Carragher, his second fires across Reina and into the bottom corner. Great goal.

36 Keane can't get on the end of Mascherano's long pass and the ball runs through to Franco.

35 Liverpool spread the ball across the midfield nicely, but Mascherano's cross fails to beat the first man and Atletico clear. But it's still a Liverpool throw deep in Atletico territory, and the volume cranks up again.

34 Keane is through for Liverpool, but Franco is out smartly to deny the former Spurs striker as he tries to go round the keeper. Keane gets to the loose ball, but his cross is headed clear. Liverpool are knocking on the door, though.

33 Good spell for Liverpool here, and the volume inside Anfield rises. Riera fizzes a cross from the left and Atletico just scramble the ball clear.

33 Gerrard bursts through the centre but Perea gets a vital foot on the ball just as the shooting chance opened up.

32 Pernia catches Arbeloa late, and the referee has a word with the Atletico man.

30 Keane flicks the ball out to Riera on the left, but the winger's control lets him down. Throw in to the visitors.

29 Keane cuts the ball back for Gerrard on the edge of the box, but Maniche gets back to nick the ball away from the Liverpool skipper.

28 Another poor punch from Franco comes out to Mascherano, but his attempt to bend the ball into the top corner sails just wide.

27 Aurelio fires in a low cross from the left and the ball nicks off Assuncao's knee, just out of Kuyt's reach and behind for a corner.

25 Neat link-up play from Gerrard and Alonso on the right. The Spaniard fires over a cross and Riera arrives almost unnoticed at the back post but can't divert the ball goalwards.

24 Keane is flagged offside from another long Alonso pass over the top.

24 The visitors have had a good spell of possession in the last couple of minutes, but haven't really done much with it.

22 Atletico just trying to slow the pace of the game here with a spell of possession.

21 Gerrard tries to play a first-time ball through for Keane when he probably had a bit more time than he realised.

20 Forlan tries to spread the play to Maxi on the left, but the ball is intercepted and brought clear by Riera.

19 Great chance for Atletico on the counter. Kuyt loses the ball to Paulo Assuncao - with more than a hint of handball - and the visitors break at pace. A cross from Pernea on the left finds Simao in space, but he gets under the ball and shoots high over the bar.

18 Good forward run from Mascherano, but the move breaks down as Arbeloa's cross is cleared my Maniche.

16 Neat pass from Mascherano to Aurelio, but his first touch is heavy and the ball goes out for an Atletico throw.

15 Almost a wonderful goal for Liverpool. Alonso plays a marvellous pass from the right-back position, and Keane brings it down expertly on his chest. He gets his shot away in a flash, but it fizzes just wide of the target and hits the post behind the goal. Some parts of Anfield thought the ball had gone the right side of the post. Not quite.

14 Arbeloa asks too much of Kuyt with his pass down the right. Goal-kick.

13 Neat turn from Keane, and he's tripped by Perea. Another free-kick for Liverpool, this time wide on the right.

13 Gerrard takes the corner and Franco unconvincingly punches the ball clear. He needed his defence to bail him out there, and they did.

12 Gerrard spreads the play to Arbeloa, whose searching cross is nodded behind for a corner.

11 Agger breaks from defence again and draws a foul 40 yards from goal.

9 Gerrard brings the ball down nicely in midfield, but his second touch is too heavy and he loses possession.

8 Agger breaks from defence, but his pass out right towards Kuyt is intercepted.

7 Frantic start to the game here, with the ball pinballing around the midfield. Needs someone to put their foot on the ball and enjoy a spell of possession.

5 The free-kick is taken quickly and wasted.

4 Simao plays the ball in to Maniche, and Mascherano tugs him back. Free-kick for Atletico.

3 Kuyt drills in a cross from the right, but puts it behind for a goal-kick.

2 The corner drops to Daniel Agger off Keane, but he's pulled back as he tries to shoot. Huge appeals for a penalty, but nothing given. Terrible defending from the set-piece, though. Keane and Agger were barely marked.

1 Liverpool win a very early corner on the rigt.

1 Atletico, in their dark blue away shirts, get us under way at Anfield.

Lewis Whalley is disappointed about Torres, but still expects a 2-0 home win tonight. Ben Keraro is cagier: he predicts another 1-1 draw or the Reds to nick it 2-1.

94 That's it. Redknapp's inspired second-half substitutions have won it for Spurs. The Londoners came back from a goal down to win and in so doing have ended Liverpool's unbeaten run in the Premier League.

93 Agger knocks a long ball into the Spurs area and King stands firm. White Hart Lane is buzzing at the moment.

92 Gerrard's corner is too long for Babel and Spurs manage to clear their lines.

91 Corner to Liverpool as Corluka knocks the ball out.

Goal90 GOAL PAVLYUCHENKO. Have Spurs pilfered a late victory? Bentley's turn outwits the Liverpool defence and he unleashes a potent shot which is well saved by Reina. The rebound, however, falls to Bent whose cross is angled into the back of the net by the second-half sub Pavlyuchenko.

89 Tottenham are pushing for a late winner now, Benitez looks rather pensive in the dugout.

88 Bentley's curling delivery is cut out by Agger and Alonso shows his commitment with a brave sliding challenge.

87 Lennon draws a foul off Kuyt with time running out.

86 Spurs attack through Lennon and his quick feet takes him past a few defenders. Mascherano stays with him and manages to dispossess his opponent.

85 Lennon accelerates from the halfway line and Mascherano has no option but to foul the winger.

84 Alonso switches the ball to Kuyt who is on the right wing. His cross is cleared by the Spurs rearguard who are alert to the danger of Gerrard lurking just outside the area.

83 Liverpool probe down the right through Kuyt but seem to lack the requisite penetration. Babel has failed to impress since coming on.

82 Pavlyuchenko shows good skill to open space up for Lennon. Agger's no-nonsense approach deals with the threat on the touchline.

81 Pavlyuchenko squanders a great chance by failing to hit the target from inside the area despite Reina being off his line. The goalkeeper flapped at a Bentley cross which created the shooting chance for the Russian.

80 Lennon's first contribution to the match is to foul Arbeloa.

79 Pavlyuchenko can't reach Bentley's cross and Liverpool counter. Kuyt sells Gerrard short and Spurs send the ball upfield.

78 Gomes comes out bravely and collects the ball with Benayoun looming.

Substitution77 Rafa Benitez makes another change as Riera is replaced by Yossi Benayoun.

76 Arbeloa beats Corluka and lays the ball off to Kuyt who strikes the ball cleanly. Unfortunately for the visitors is flashes wide of Gomes' goal-post.

Substitution75 Lennon comes on and takes the place of Modric. Redknapp is obviously happy with Bentley's contribution.

Yellow Card74 Bentley floats in a free-kick and Reina gather comfortably. The Spanish 'keeper looks to set off a Liverpool counter and is fouled by King who is yellow carded for his trouble.

73 Aaron Lennon is warming up and could replace Bentley down the right.

72 A thumping volley from Alonso is blocked by King.

71 Keane's substitution appears to have been the turning point in this match. The momentum is now clearly with the home side.

70 Redknapp is animated on the touchline willing his men forward.

Goal69 GOAL SPURS (Carragher OG). Alonso gives away a corner and Bentley's corner causes havoc in the Liverpool defence. White Hart Lane erupts as the ball ends up in the back of the net. Carragher was the man with the last touch.

68 Modric makes more work for Carragher who clears under pressure from Pavlyuchenko.

Yellow Card66 Modric's clever play makes space for Hutton down the right. The ball comes to Bentley and he draws the foul from Carragher who is booked for what seems to be an innocuous challenge. The free-kick is wasted and Liverpool clear their lines.

Substitution65 There it is. Keane gets a decent round of applause as he is withdrawn for the Dutch forward.

64 Ryan Babel looks set to make his appearance any moment now.

63 Gerrard's rasping pass is picked up by an advancing Alonso. Once in shooting range the Spanish midfielder tries his luck. Gomes is not called into action as the ball flies at least five yards wide of the upright.

62 Riera threads a lovely ball through to Keane down the right. The striker is adjudged to have fouled the Spurs defender.

61 Kuyt's lazy pass is cut out by Corluka. Things have quietened down now.

60 It has been an action-packed quarter-hour since the interval with both sides looking to attack.

59 A Bentley corner is cleared by Kuyt and Zokora's weak shot rolls out for a goal-kick.

58 Another chance for Gerrard whose bending shot takes a touch off Riera before flying out for a goal-kick. Good play from Arbeloa and Riera opened up the Spurs defence.

57 Alonso - of all people - is unmarked on the far post and he heads just wide.

55 End-to-end stuff at the Lane. Modric attempts a shot from outside the area and the ball is blocked by Agger.

54 Kuyt finds space in the box and connects Arbeloa's cross. His shot is poor - indeed it hits his shin - and flies just over the bar.

53 Another gaffe from Gomes almost leads to Liverpool's second. The Brazilian's pass is short and Kuyt beats King to the ball. Gerrard attempts to chip the 'keeper who is off his line and watches his effort hit the crossbar.

53 Gerrard's delivery is good and Woodgate just beats Agger to the ball to clear.

52 Kuyt is blocked by Corluka and wins a free-kick in a dangerous area outside the area on the right.

50 Spurs have a corner at the other end and King flicks on the delivery. It goes out for a goal-kick.

49 Mascherano picks up the pieces after Zokora sends a wayward pass into midfield. Liverpool attack through a rampaging Kuyt whose shot is charged down. Gerrard takes a pop off the rebound and his shot deflects off King's arm before hitting the crossbar! Gomes got a crucial touch with his fingertips and pushed the ball onto the post. A crucial save that.

48 The goal-scorer then commits a foul on Corluka. The crowd has been energised by the changes - can this boost the home side?

47 A slightly worse start for the other sub Hutton. He gives the ball away and Kuyt collects.

46 The Russian striker's first touch is brilliant. He controls the ball on his chest and fires his shot just wide of Reina's right-hand upright. Good start that for Spurs.

Substitution46 The game is underway once again and as expected Redknapp makes a couple of changes. Assou-Ekotto and O'Hara make way for Alan Hutton and Pavlyuchenko.

45+2 That's half-time folks. Liverpool are good value for their lead. Will Redknapp reshuffle his pack and perhaps give Roman Pavlyuchenko a run after the break?

45+1 Kuyt tries to thread a pass through the middle for Gerrard. Woodgate is alert to the danger and clears. Gerrard is cautioned, however, for sliding in on the former Real Madrid defender.

45 There will be one minute of added time, apparently.

44 Woodgate heads clear a dangerous looking Dossena cross.

43 Kuyt's goal still the difference in north London. Keane gets in behind King yet can't shake off his former team-mate.

42 Mascherano gives the ball away and Spurs have a throw-in.

41 Modric then beats Alonso to the ball off Agger's clearance. The midfielder hits a powerful right-footed shot which is blocked by Reina. Decent chance for Spurs.

40 Corluka wins a corner off Agger. Bentley's delivery is cleared and Huddlestone's long-range shot is tame to say the least.

39 Liverpool force the home team back again. Corluka attempts to launch a long ball but is charged down by Keane.

38 Assou-Ekotto wins a free-kick off Kuyt and Spurs make some progress down the left.

36 Keane has a shot from around 25 yards and King does well to charge down his shot. It all stemmed from Dossena's great cross from the left.

35 Both sides have resorted to long balls. The difference is that Liverpool have a focal point that is actually winning possession in Kuyt.

34 Keane has had a few touches now and hasn't received a good reception from the Spurs faithful.

33 Keane finds Riera off Daniel Agger's long ball. Keane and Gerrard look to share a one-two. Spurs intercept as the Irish striker's pass is a few yards too far ahead of his captain.

32 Reina again looks to find Kuyt and this time O'Hara beats the Dutchman to the ball.

31 Liverpool have all ten men behind the ball as Spurs look for a way through the wall of red.

30 Bentley shows interest in the set-piece but blasts his effort well over the crossbar.

29 Huddlestone wins a free-kick following Carragher's robust challenge. Or was it Riera's tackle on Modric?

28 Bent is isolated up front all alone and really needs Modric to push up and support him. Kuyt wins another header and finds Gerrard who dribbles past a couple of defenders and shoots. Luckily for Spurs he fails to time it sweetly.

27 Kuyt has drifted out wide and plays a neat triangle with Alonso and Arbeloa before Spurs force Liverpool back into their own half. Riera then goes on a run before he loses the ball. Spurs look to build an attack again.

26 O'Hara tries a snap shot off a looping clearance and is closed down by Carragher. The defender blocks the ball and concedes another throw-in.

25 Modric has a chance to run at the Liverpool defence and Mascherano tracks back to force the playmaker wide and win a throw-in.

23 A better spell this for Harry Redknapp's men who enjoy some possession. Modric has had a few touches and is coming into the game a little.

22 Modric switches the ball to Bentley on the right and he lays it off to Vedran Corluka. The Croatian's cross is menacing but fails to find the lone front man.

21 Liverpool are content to sit back and pass the ball to Reina who inevitably sends the ball up the middle with Kuyt the intended recipient.

20 Kuyt and Keane win a couple of headers and are making a nuisance of themselves.

19 Ledley King clears after Keane's excellent turn appeared to have the Spurs skipper in trouble. A good recovery that.

18 Kuyt's goal the difference at the Lane and the Reds have looked solid at the back. Will their unbeaten run continue?

17 Modric's hard work in the right channel pays off and space opens up for Bentley. His shot, however, flies well wide.

16 Spurs really appear to be missing the influence of Jenas in midfield.

15 Alonso's delivery is poor and Liverpool win another throw-in. Gerrard plays a nifty one-two with Keane but the England midfielder scuffs his shot.

14 Jamie O'Hara cuts in from the left in search of work. Liverpool stand firm and attack down the right through Alvaro Arbeloa. The Spaniard wins a free-kick off Assou-Ekotto.

13 Gerrard's driving run unnerves the Spurs faithful until the skipper over-runs it and the ball rolls out for a throw-in.

12 Tom Huddlestone's long pass opens up the Liverpool defence and Reina comes out and clears while under severe pressure from Bent.

11 The home team attempt to build from the back. So far the likes of Luka Modric have failed to make an impact on the match.

10 Javier Mascherano gives the ball away cheaply though.

9 Pepe Reine bombs a long ball up-field. Riera wins a free-kick for the Reds.

8 Spurs stroke the ball about to try and settle the nerves and David Bentley whips in a splendid cross that is dealt with by Jamie Carragher.

7 It's all Liverpool as Andrea Dossena's finds space down the left. His cross is cut out by Jon Woodgate.

6 Albert Riera switches to the play to the right and Keane is booed by his old supporters.

5 Gomes gets two hands to Gerrard's delivery. Liverpool win a corner and the ball ricochets off Darren Bent and into the upright. A lucky break for Spurs.

4 Keane is looking lively and him and Kuyt win a free-kick on the right flank.

Goal3 GOAL LIVERPOOL. Dirk Kuyt opens the scoring with an emphatic finish from inside the area. He was set-up by Spurs old-boy Robbie Keane, who beat Benoit Assou-Ekotto to a throw-in on the edge of the area.

2 The home crowd give Heuerelho Gomes an ironic cheer as he shows a safe pair of hands to catch Steven Gerrard's free-kick.

2 Didier Zokora gets a touch - the Ivorian a late replacement for the injured Jermaine Jenas.

1 Tottenham get the game underway at a wet White Hart Lane and immediately attack straight down the middle.

Fancy a bet on tonight's game? Sky Bet go 3/1 the Tottenham win, with Liverpool evens and the draw a 9/4 shot.

There goes the final whistle and although Liverpool did not convince against a stout Portsmouth rearguard they still found a way through - albeit thanks to Diop’s lapse. And the points are enough to keep them top.

93 Keane has a chance to settle it but drags his left-footed shot wide of the far post.

92 James scampers out of his goal and just beats Keane to the ball, and Crouch fouls at the other end to relieve some pressure building on Liverpool.

Substitution90 Robbie Keane comes on for the final couple of minutes as goalscorer Gerrard takes a bow.

90 Distin struggles to get a long bouncing ball away under pressure from Kuyt, and when he does Defoe goes down in the box but no penalty there - three minutes of added time to play.

88 Portsmouth applying all the pressure now and Liverpool can’t get a foot on the ball as they drop deeper.

86 Benayoun gets a free kick out of Belhadj, but Liverpool give it away and Pompey now have a free kick and load the box.

Substitution85 Defoe does come on now with five minutes left and Utaka makes way as Pompey go for the equaliser.

83 Belhadj whips in a great cross and Utaka is somehow not picked up but he is just inches away from connecting with the header and the ball hits Hyypia’s legs and out for a corner - which Reina gathers.

82 Portsmouth now trying to push forward, and Crouch takes a high ball down dangerously but Carragher recovers to snuff out the danger.

Substitution80 Adams makes a change, but it’s not Defoe coming on but Richard Hughes, who replaces Diarra.

77 Adams will be fuming at the penalty - not so much the referee’s decision but Diop’s bizarre decision to jump with Hyypia with both arms high in the air!

Penalty Goal75 Goal! Gerrard squeezes his penalty into the bottom corner with James going the right way but not able to get a hand on it.

Penalty Given74 Referee Steve Tanner points to the spot as Diop handles the ball in a challenge with Hyypia.

73 James produces a good save to parry away Aurelio’s powerful strike.

72 Great chance for Benayoun as Gerrard slips a great ball through to him. The Israeli possibly takes too long sorting his feet out and Distin gets back to block his effort.

Substitution71 That’s the last input from Babel and he goes off to be replaced by Albert Riera.

70 Babel again looks to be the main threat as he powers forward, Alonso gets the shot in eventually but it’s deflected wide by Kuyt.

69 Gerrard tries to skip through but Distin just gets a toe in at the vital moment. Liverpool are trying to play their way through but it’s a crowded middle with Pompey flooding their defence.

Substitution65 Tony Adams brings off Traore and brings on a more attacking presence in Niko Kranjcar.

63 Referee Steve Tanner somehow misses Kaboul rippping his stubs down Babel’s knee and the Dutchman needs some treatment.

Substitution63 Benitez makes a change and brings on Yossi Benayoun for Pennant in the hope of unlocking the Portsmouth defence.

60 A poor touch from Babel brings groans from the crowd as an hour passes with still no sign of a breakthrough.

58 Hyypia shows Kuyt how to attack a header when he rises to Gerrard’s corner, but the big Finn’s effort is just wide of the near post.

55 Liverpool pressing and probing, but there’s plenty of Pompey players back defending. Aurelio does find Kuyt with a good cross in, but it’s a woeful effort from the Dutchman heading his effort right into the ground and looping it into James’ arms.

51 Great reverse thump across goal from Gerrard out right and Kuyt is in there, but he’s not quick enough to get on the end of it and it fizzes across the six yard box.

49 Awful, and I mean truly awful free kick attempt from Xavi Alonso, dribbling his effort against the toes of those in the wall.

Yellow Card48 Diarra goes into the book for bringing down Gerrarda couple of yards outside the box in a dangerous area.

47 Great ball in from Traore on the left but Crouch is slow to reactand Hyypia can clear the ball away.

46 Portsmouth start the second half with no changes from either side - Pompey will be happy with the first 45 but Liverpool will want to create more this half.

Half Time The whistle goes for half-time and it’s so far so good for Portsmouth with Liverpool more probing than carving them open and just a couple of nervy moments for James

45 A late Liverpool corner as Kuyt hits a weak effort to say the least. Pompey switch off and Arbeloa hits a first-timer from Pennant’s ball that curls up and over James but just wide of the far post.

44 More good work from Babel and Gerrard flashes a low shot in from the right edge that James only parries right back into the middle of his goal, but luckily for him it goes to Pamarot ahead of Kuyt - the Pompey keeper got lucky there.

42 Kuyt’s given room to move towards the box, but his last touch is a shocker and he loses the chance to shoot at goal.

39 Half of Anfield think it’s a goal! But it’s not. Gerrard gallops through, slips in Kuyt who takes the shot early and hits it hard, low and true, but into the side netting at James’ near post.

37 The game starts again but Babel looks shaky to say the least after a heavy collision with Diop - thats enough to shake anyone up!

35 Babel is down injured so there’s a break in play. Lewis Moyes (interesting surname for a Liverpool fan!) is backing Kuyt to be the Liverpool hero tonight - if you agree then he’s 5-1 to score the first goal with Sky Bet of you pop along to their website and unload a few quid.

33 Crouch gets his first real chance from a free kick but he nods his header over the bar and into the Kop.

30 Kuyt turns on the edge of the box and whips a left-footed effort just over the bar.

29 Gerrard again finds nothing but wall with his free kick, and Jamie Carragher has to show him how to shoot with the rebound that flies through the crowd but goes right at James who gathers.

28 Diop floors Babel with a big shoulder charge and the ref blows up for a free kick - an old school move that from the Big midfielder.

27 Crouch offside as he tries to get in behind, the big man has never been blessed with enough pace to do that! It does signal though that Pompey are growing into the game and they are now getting a foothold on proceedings.

26 Great chance for Pompey! Hyypia deflects a Davis cross straight to unmarked Diop just seven yards up, but he fires his powerful header straight at Pepe Reina and Liverpool get a big left-off.

25 At last Portsmouth get a chance after a stupid foul from Babel, but as the ball swings in from the touchline Kaboul’s header comes from all over 18 yards and floats wide.

21 Gary Ellison says too many changes from Benitez could hindered Liverpool tonight - so far they’ve been totally dominant but James has made just the one big save so far as Pompey up to now have ‘Parked the bus’ as someone once said.

19 Superb run from Babel down the left, powering in between two Pompey defenders to get inside the box but weight of numbers prevails and Pamarot gets a toe away.

17 Traore brings down Arbeloa right on the left edge of the box. Gerrard takes it ahead of Aurelio but smashes the ball right into the foot of the wall - the angle favoured the Brazilian more from there.

15 Chance! Gerrard powers into the box down the right and centres for Kuyt - but the Dutchman had held his run waiting for the cut-back and the chance is lost.

11 Another Liverpool corner - Aurelio finds Lucas free in space eight yards out but he plants a free header well over the bar - another failed corner from the Reds.

10 Kuyt hits the woodwork! Nice work from Pennant and Arbeloa finds Kuyt at the edge of the box and he fires across David James, but the ex-Liverpool keeper gets a a good finger tip onto the upright and Pompey clear.

8 Pennant fires in a dangerous cross but Babel can’t get close to it, down the other end Crouch gets a dangerous knock-down for the onrushing Sean Davis but Hyypia blocks him off.

6 Another corner won by Pennant - Kuyt again closest to getting a touch but not quite. Liverpool force huge numbers of corners at home but hardly ever seem to get a goal from them.

3 Kane McDonald believes Liverpool’s title challenge is on - but says they will need to grind one out again tonight against Pompey. Lucas is certainly up for the fight tonight as he wins a battle with Diarra.

2 Dirk Kuyt has the first chance as he finds space and old team-mate Crouch kindly flicks him the ball, but the Ducthman blazes over.

1 Liverpool get the game underway attacking the Anfield Road end while Crouch and co attack the Kop - immediately Pennant forces a corner.

The teams are out at Anfield - what a first game in charge for Adams! It’s a decent atmosphere on a cold night in Liverpool and it’s a huge game for both teams tonight.

On the team news front, four changes from Rafa - Agger, Mascherano, Keane and Riera out with Hyypia, Pennant, Babel and Lucas in, while Adams has left out Defoe.

Peter Crouch returns to Anfield for the first time since his move, and meanwhile it is also Tony Adams’ first game in charge since taking over from Harry Redknapp - any thoughts on these points and the team news email me at Paul.Higham@bskyb.com and I’ll try and get through the best of them.

Plenty of talking points tonight before the game has even started. Liverpool top the Premier League after beating Chelsea, is it finally a title challenge from the Reds?

And the teams are in:

Liverpool: Reina, Arbeloa, Hyypia, Carragher, Aurelio, Pennant, Alonso, Leiva Lucas, Babel, Gerrard, Kuyt.
Subs: Cavalieri, Dossena, Agger, Keane, Riera, Benayoun, Mascherano.

Portsmouth: James, Pamarot, Kaboul, Distin, Belhadj, Utaka, Davis, Diop, Diarra, Armand Traore, Crouch.

Chelsea 0 Liverpool 1. The Blues’ unbeaten run comes to an end and Liverpool open up a three-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

90+3 Di Santo spots Reina off his line and goes for goal from distance. His effort is never on target, though, and sails over the top.

90+1 Anelka and Terry try to cause havoc at a free-kick, but see the ball elude them both and roll agonisingly out of play.

Substitution90 Final change for the Reds see Hyypia come on in place of Riera.

89 Mikel sends a hopeful effort sailing high into the crowd as Chelsea’s hopes continue to fade.

Substitution88 Kuyt goes off to be replaced by Lucas.

87 End-to-end stuff now as Babel almost gets in at one end and Anelka is almost set galloping free on the counter. Tired legs are beginning to take their toll - which is why it comes as a surprise that Benitez has still only made one change.

Substitution85 Sinclair comes on in place of Bosingwa. Can his pace cause problems down the right?

83 Di Santo is well marshalled by Agger as the Danish centre-half prevents the youngster from getting on the end of a hopeful ball aimed in his direction.

82 Lampard sends a header straight at Reina as Liverpool allow a long throw to bounce inside the box. Another warning to the men in red.

81 Riera tires to link up with Babel on the edge of the area, only to see his route to goal blocked out by the considerbale frame of Carvalho. Liverpool have offered little this half but are still hanging on.

Yellow Card79 Deco sees yellow for a tug on Mascherano. He lost the ball and knew exactly what he was doing.

77 Gareth Davidson feels an equaliser now hands the moral victory to Chelsea, while Kurt has been disappointed by the Blues’ all round performance after a number of fine showings of late.

77 Babel rockets a 20-yard drive inches past the post after forcing a yard of space. Cech could only watch and admire as he was once again left flat-footed.

76 Deco dances inside the box, creates a yard, but sees his scuffed effort knocked behind. Terry clatters into Reina challenging for the ball, resulting in handbags all round inside the Liverpool box. Great delivery by Lampard fell right under the crossbar, although Terry did lead with his arm.

75 Rare waste by Gerrard as his free-kick drifts straight out of play with plenty of bodies waiting in the box. Meanwhile, Di Santo, who is not the biggest, sends a towering header narrowly wide.

74 Best chance of the game for Chelsea falls to Cole. The full-back is well found by Di Santo, but slices badly from 8-yards when presented with a clear sight of goal. How many better opportunities than that will the home side get?

73 Cole delivers from the left but it’s the same old story for Chelsea as it is knocked away by the first man.

72 Scolari is on his feet and does not look happy. Can Big Phil produce a managerial masterstroke as time ebbs away?

There are a few nerves being shredded among the Reds faithful, while Blues fans must be wondering what their side have to do to get back on level terms. In fairness, the second half has not provided much of a spectacle and Liverpool just about deserve to be clinging on.

70 Not if they play like that it won’t be. Belletti finds space on the edge fo the box, but rather than shoot or pass, he does neither and hands Liverpool a cheap goal kick. Poor, very poor from the Brazilian.

69 Liverpool continue to put up stubborn resistance, but Chelsea are still knocking on the door. Is it only a matter of time before the Blues pull level?

68 Mascherano makes a rare foray forward and is unlucky not to pick out Babel as he squirts a cross across the face of goal.

67 Deco looks to pick on Di Santo, who is yet to make impact, only to see the commanding Carragher get in front of the young striker.

66 Gerrard throws a free-kick towards the back post. Arbeloa is the closest red shirt to the ball, but is beaten in the air by Cech.

Yellow Card65 Mascherano goes into the book for questioning a decision.

65 Fine interplay between Babel and Gerrard sees the Dutch winger inches away from collecting a pass clean through on goal.

64 Cech takes command of a long-ball over the top, rushing off his line to gather at the feet of Kuyt.

Rex Mar in India believes Liverpool need another as Chelsea are capable of scoring at any time. The way they have played as times this season, he may be right!

63 Belletti leads the counter-attack but Mascherano, who else, is on hand to break play up and slow things down. He really does an outstanding job for the Reds.

62 Alonso swings a 25-yard free-kick past the wall and sees it ping back off the foot of the post. Cech was rooted to the spot after going the wrong way. So close to a second for Liverpool.

Shane Aherne sees Chelsea snatching a point in a 1-1 draw, something the Blues would probably take at present!

Substitution60 Babel comes on for Keane. Kuyt now moves up top.

60 Cole tumbles under a challenge from Kuyt. There didn’t seem to be much contact from the Dutchman and Howard Webb waves away the protests.

Josh Hunt has no fingernails left as he praying that Gerrard can force a second for the men in Red. If I’m being honest, It is the Blues who look the more likely to force a breakthrough at present.

Substitution58 Di Santo comes on in place of Kalou and Malouda makes way for Belletti.

58 Bosingwa lobs a high cross into the box. Blues shirts rise on mass, but Reina comes through the crowd to claim confidently. At the other end, Kuyt fires narrowly wide from distance.

57 Action on the bench, with Chelsea ready to make changes.

Yellow Card56 Another caution to the mouting list as Ashley Cole kicks out at Carragher and is rightly disciplined.

55 Malouda breaks clear and clatters into Reina. The French winger is flagged offisde, though, much to the Liverpool keeper’s relief. It looked a nailed-on penalty had play been allowed to continue.

Yellow Card54 Malouda goes into the book for bringing down Riera. Aurelio then fires the resulting free-kick high into the stands.

53 Malouda, has he been mentioned yet, finally springs to life and is unlucky not to pick out Anelka with a flighted cross from the left. Chelsea are working hard and will be confident that they can find a way through the Reds’ rearguard.

52 Gerrard is finding plenty of space in midfield and Chelsea can ill-afford to give him so much space. He is yet to hit top gear, but he is more than capable.

Plenty of support coming in for Liverpool, with the general consensus seeming to be that the Reds will hold on. What do you think?

51 Better from Lampard, but Liverpool are able to scramble the ball. However, having pulled everyone back, they have no outlet and are soon back on the defensive.

50 Bosingwa runs into Aurelio, but is awarded a free-kick and Chelsea load the area. Waht can they do with this?

48 Gerrard winds up a free-kick from 35-yards, he is closed down, though, and his square ball to Arbeloa is cut out by Mikel.

James in Orland goes 1-1 and Mark Doyle sees the Reds winning by two clear goals. It is still wide open!

47 Liverpool look to keen to get as many men behind the ball as possible. Can the Red wall hold firm?

46 Gerrard feins to shoot, but relases Keane. However, the Irishman was expecting his skipper to pull the trigger and is unable to gather the pass. Flying start from the Reds.

Liverpool get us up and running again.

Steve, in Canada, is concerned Liverpool will be breached, while he also believes Gerrard may see a second yellow. That would throw the cat among the pigeons!

Steve Fleming sees Liverpool hanging on in their ‘title decider’, Kingsely is backing the Blues to be better after the break and claim a 3-1 success, while Priya in Amsterdam goes 3-1 Liverpool. John, in Indonesia, is a Scot with Italin blood who is backing Liverpool to win - very confusing!

For those of you who fancy a flutter, skybet.com offer Liverpool at 10/11 to hang on and Chelsea 3/1 to stage a comeback. 1-1 is 12/5 while Gerrard is 14/1 to get the next goal.

Half Time Chelsea 0 Liverpool 1. No stoppage-time and Alonso’s deflected effort seperates the two sides at the break. What can we expect after the break - remember you can get in touch at Chris.Burton@bskyb.com.

Patrick English, another Red in America, hopes a win today will be a stepping stone towards a long-awaited title on Merseyside, while Steve is keeping faith with Chelsea.

44 Kuyt, Keane and Alonso almost force Mikel into a mistake on the edge of his own box. The Nigerian is helped out by Carvalho who uncompromisingly hammers the ball clear. The Blues were almost undone by their own error there - that would be the last thing they need!

43 Riera plays a sloppy pass towards Aurelio, who puts in no effort to get on the end of the loose ball. The full-back, instead, races back into position. Liverpool are obviously unwilling to take any risks with so much at stake.

George Cleaver is backing the Blues to snatch a leveller before the break and go on to claim a 3-1 win. They need to be quick if they are to force a breakthrough before the interval.

42 Deco’s 30-yard effort cannons behind for a corner but, yet again, Lampard’s delivery is poor and Liverpool clear their lines.

41 Liverpool have been pushed onto the backfoot as the first half draws to a close and seem incapable of building an attack. They cannot afford to sit back and soak up pressure!

40 Lampard goes for goal from the resulting free-kick and fires straight into the face of Mascherano. The Argentine hits the deck, but is soon back on his feet and looks okay to continue.

Yellow Card39 Gerrard is cautioned for a lunging challenge on Bosingwa. Slightly harsh, but his name goes into the book.

38 Lampard looks for Terry with a free-kick, but the Chelsea skipper is beaten to the ball by Agger.

37 Deco tries his luck from 25-yards, slices his effort and sees it cannon into the advertising boards. Liverpool continue to look tight at the back and are yet to be really troubled.

Quick mention to Jeremy in South Africa and Paul in Scunthrope who is questioning the decision to hand Webb today’s game - apparantly he’s a Liverpool fan!

36 On the field, Anelka continues to be hounded by Agger who is now stalking the Frenchman wherever he goes.

There continues to be divided opinion on the feedback, with an almost 50-50 split between those backing the Blues and those tipping Red success.

34 Lampard delivers himself, but it is cut out at the front post and the chance goes begging. Wasted opportunity and the England man knows it.

33 Kalou jinks his way past a couple of challenges but can’t force the ball past the irrepressible Carragher. Meanwhile, Lampard drives against Arbeloa - forcing a corner.

32 The game is being broken up with some needless fouls and lacks much of the fluidity of the opening exchanges. The match is yet to open up, but after the break, if the scoreline stays the same, Chelsea will have to go for broke.

Joel Brink is backing Chelsea to recover from the early blow and come back into the game. While many people feel the Blues have the firepower to trouble Benitez’s side.

30 Cole finds himself inside the Liverpool box but, rather than shoot, he feeds Kalou and the striker’s woeful first touch sends the ball skidding into the grateful arms of Reina.

29 Chelsea have looked anything but their free-flowing best so far, with Liverpool doing a top job in frustrating them.

Eniola is going for a gol-fest 4-2 Chelsea win! Nadav in Israel is backing his countryman Benayoun to make an impact from the bench and Andrei from Mauritius is going 3-1 Liverpool.

27 Riera, who has been bright, has the beating of Bosingwa at the moment and delivers a couple of telling crosses which really derserved better support in the middle.

26 deco is getting more involved now, which could bode well for Chelsea, but as yet the little Portuguese has been unable to unlock the Liverpool defence.

25 The resulting corner breaks down and Chelsea are able to clear their lines with ease.

24 Gerrard fires a dipping 25-yard effort goalwards, which forces Cech into a fingertip save. Almost two in spectacular fashion.

Conor Higgins fears for Chelsea, Martin is tuning in from China and Carlo is backing the Reds. Hello to you all!

23 Kalou does his best to divert a header goalwards but, with the ball behind him, can only find the stands

Yellow Card21 First caution of the game goes to Arbeloa for unsporting behaviour.

Thanks to Peter from Namibia for getting in touch. He sees Liverpool ending Chelsea’s impressive home record this afternoon.

20 Kalou again causes problems down the right and throws a dangerous ball into the box. Anelka, though, is hardly known for his heading ability and makes no effort to make a connection.

Sam is basking in the glory of tipping an early goal, while Ade is backtracking quickly on his 0-0 prediction. Probably for the best my friend!

18 Chelsea appear to he re-grouped and slow the frenetic pace down with a period of prolonged possession. It is all very aimless, though, and they do little to threaten Liverpool’s backline.

17 Alonso is fortunate to escape a caution for a clumsy tackle on Bosingwa. Riera then breaks into the box, he tries to beat Cech at his near post but only finds the side-netting. Gerrard is livid at the back post as he had bust a gut to get up in support.

Nathan Khider, in Qatar, sees the Reds coming out on top and Mazin sees them getting a second in a 2-0 win. Let’s see!

15 Carragher clatters into Kalou on the edge of the box, Howard Webb plays the advanatge and Lampard scuffs his shot straight at Reina. Chelsea complain about the first tackle, but Lampard should have done better.

Thanks to Alan Ferris for getting in touch from Australia and wishing the Reds all the best.

14 Deco tries to skip past Aurelio, only to be outdone by his own tricks. Not happening for Chelsea at the moment.

13 Anelka bursts into the box down the left but cannot force in a low drive at the near post. Reina is yet to be troubled, but Liverpool were given a warning there of Anelka’s blistering pace.

12 Liverpool look buoyed by the goal and are knocking the ball around with ease. The blue shirts are chasing shadows at present. They need to compose themselves and establish a foothold in the game.

Goal10 GOAL! Chelsea 0 Liverpool 1. Alonso tries his luck from the edge of the box and sees the ball sail past a helpless Cech via the aid of a Bosingwa deflection. Game on!

10 Arbeloa makes positive strides down the right and forces Cole into drastic action. The Reds have a platform on which to build.

9 Flick from Anelka sees Kalou give chase. He outpaces Aurelio, but fails to keep the ball in play. Lively start from Kalou who is popping up all over the place.

8 Kalou thinks he has found space on the right, only to be flagged for offside. No need from the Chelsea man as he was looking right along the line.

7 Chelsea have enjoyed the majority of the early possession, giving everyone a touch and a chance to get settled, but as yet have produced little going forward.

Ade is going for a dour 0-0 today. I certainly hope not, although games between the top sides do have an annoying tendancy to fall flat. Meanwhile, a confident Paul is tipping the Blues to win 4-1. Very early days, but anything can happen!

5 Ball in the net for the first time this afternoon, but Anleka’s knock down to Kalou saw him in an offside position. Reina made no attempt to stop the effort, but it was well taken by the Ivorian.

4 Alonso is the first man to lose his footing, freeing Anelka. He is blocked off by Agger and Deco’s follow-up deflects behind off Carragher. Nothing comes from the resulting set-piece.

3 Ashley Cole escapes down the left, pushing Kuyt all the way back, but is unable to get over a cross and recycles possession. Mikel tries an ambitious raking ball towards Kalou, but over-hits it and sees it roll behind.

2 Anelka almost escapes in behind Carragher, but the Liverpool stalwart rises high to nod the ball away from danger. Anelka will play an important role today as it is vital he holds the ball up for Chelsea and brings others into play. Is the Frenchman up to the task?

1 An energetic start by both sides with plenty of bodies dashing around in the middle of the park. Let’s hope that continues.

Chelsea get us underway.

Emery Spencer believes Mascherano and Alonso will be crucial for Liverpool, but sees the game finishing all square. And, Adnaan sees the Reds coming from behind to take a 2-1 victory. I’m sure Benitez will be hoping his side do not put him through the mill again this afternoon. Chelsea are a different proposition to Man City and Wigan! With kick-off upon us we will end the build-up with David Garnon backing the Blues to win 3-1. Here we go!

Before we get going, Sam is hoping for an early goal to open the game up, for Liverpool’s benefit, while John Sutton is tipping Benitez’s side to prevail in a 3-1 win. I’m going to steer well clear of predictions as this game could go either way!

The teams are in the tunnel and the atmosphere has been turned up a notch. There is also some drizzle in the air which should help to slicken up the surface and help the passing game of both sides.

Brandon also feels today’s encounter is difficult to call, which everyone appears to be in agreement on, but has plumped for a 2-1 success to the visitors. Kick-off is drawing ever closer, so we do not have long to wait now before the time for talking will cease and the action can begin!

Matt Chapple is first out of the blocks and hopes Liverpool buck their recent trend of coming from behind. He is tipping Robbie Keane to be the Reds’ hero in a narrow win. Lewis Whalley feels today’s game will not determine the destiny of the title, but is hoping Liverpool come out on top, and Mark Porritt is going for a comfortable Chelsea victory. Mixed feelings all round - let’s hope the game lives up to expectations.

Team news: Ashley Cole comes back in for Chelsea in Scolari’s only change, while Fernando Torres misses out once again for Liverpool as Dirk Kuyt and Robbie Keane are charged with attacking responsibilities.

Today’s referee is Howard Webb.

Liverpool team: Reina, Arbeloa, Carragher, Agger, Aurelio, Alonso, Mascherano, Kuyt, Gerrard, Riera, Keane. Subs: Cavalieri, Dossena, Hyypia, Benayoun, Pennant, Babel, Leiva Lucas.

Liverpool 3 Wigan 2. A remarkable game comes to a conclusion and the points remain at Anfield. Thanks for joining me this afternoon and I hope you enjoyed the game as much as I did.

Substitution90+4 Keane goes off to make way for Hyypia.

90+3 Keane looks to be clean through, only to be pulled back by the linesman's flag. Not going to be his day by the looks of things.

90+2 Keane, Gerrard and Benayoun pile forward but somehow fail to conjure up a fourth. Not that it really matters with only seconds remaining.

Substitution89 Koumas is on in place of Palacios.

89 Keane fires into Kirkland's arms from a tight angle, with little support. Liverpool are happy to take what they have got and will not be taking any chances in the dying moments.

87 Wigan have gone for broke and thrown men forward, but it looks to be too little, too late.

Goal85 GOAL! Liverpool 3 Wigan 2. What did i say! Pennant throws over a cross and Kuyt's scuffed volley bounces into the roof of the net. Turnaround complete and Liverpool have come from behind again! Perhaps the title is destined for Anfield!

84 Benayoun dances through the Wigan defence and sees a shot cannon into Scharner. Wigan are wobbling and look in danger of seeing a point slip away.

Substitution82 Brown replaces Kapo for Wigan. Bruce looking to add some steel in midfield.

81 Even Carragher is pushing forward now, lifting a cross towards Keane. The striker pushes Bramble in the back, though, and is penalised.

Goal80 GOAL! Liverpool 2 Wigan 2. The breakthrough arrives from Riera. El Zhar pulls the ball back to the edge of the box, Gerrard dummies, and Riera drills into the bottom corner. Wigan's 10-men fail to hang on.

Substitution79 Benayoun on for Arbeloa and Kilbane on for De Ridder.

Josh Burrow doesn't see Wigan holding on, while Terry Eden is going for 2-2. Ibrahim Brohim feels Liverpool lack firepower and David Chatfield has no faith in Kuyt and Keane.

Substitution77 El Zhar on in place of Dossena for Liverpool.

77 Alonso's drive from the edge of the box is deflected wide. Kirkland was wrong-footed and would not have been able to recover in time.

76 Reina is playing sweeper now, dealing with balls 30-yards from goal. Liverpool will be expected to lay siege to the Wigan goal now.

75 Figueroa goes for goal from his own half, with Reina off his line, but is nowhere near the target.

Red Card74 Valencia is dismissed for a needless challenge on Alonso. Two cards in the space of five minutes for the Latics winger. Will that prove to be a turning point?

At last, we have a Wigan point of view. Erol Francis is boldly tipping 4-1 and Colin Rowlands is piling the praise on Zaki. Nice to see the Latics speak up. Where have you been? Your boys are winning at Anfield!

71 Alonso taps to Gerrard and his side-footed effort brushes the post on its way wide. Kirkland was rooted to the spot and would have got nowhere near it. So close to a leveller by the Reds skipper.

Yellow Card70 Valencia is cautioned for his role in the hold-up.

70 The free-kick is delayed by Wigan's refusal to retreat 10-yards.

69 Clumsy challenge by Scharner on the edge of the box puts Liverpool in shooting range. What can they do with this?

67 Bad decision by De Ridder as he goes for goal from a ludicrous angle and only finds the side-netting. He had Zaki and Valencia to aim for in the box, but failed to get his head up.

66 Pennant has looked bright for Liverpool this afternoon and has the beating of Figueroa once again. His delivery, though, is poor and the chance is lost.

Carlo and David both feel this is the kind of game Liverpool need to win if they are become title contenders. I have to agree, but hope is not lost yet.

64 Zaki continues to dominate the Reds defence, proving to be too strong and too nibble for Carragher and co. He has been a revalation since his summer arrival in England and looks the real deal.

62 The sun is now shining on Anfield, but can Liverpool illuminate this impressive arena? They are trying too hard at the minute, with Kuyt flagged offside twice in quaick succession.

Another stoppage in play - this time for De Ridder. Benitez is making sure the time is added on by Mr Riley at the end by gesturing theatrically towards the referee.

60 Wigan have pulled everyone behind the ball and are being put under immense pressure. Gerrard and Kuyt go close yet again, but fail to hit the target. Meanwhile, Zaki is back with us.

David Malone does not see Wigan holding on much longer and believes it is only a matter of time before Liverpool force a breakthrough. Will he prove to be right?

59 Another chance for Liverpool goes begging as Riera rises to meet a corner but nods inches wide. Frustration mounts for the majority of those inside Anfield.

58 Kirkland with a wonderful save to deny Kuyt. Keane's searching ball picked him out and his deft touch was heading towards the far corner.

57 Keane's low drive flicks off Scharner on his path through to goal and runs behind for a corner. Another opportunity for Liverpool. However, the set-piece is wasted as the Reds play it short and run out of room. Poor decision!

Bad news for Wigan supporters as Zaki has stayed down holding his calf. He goes off for treatment, will he return?

55 Liverpool fail to deal with a looping cross into the box and Zaki is only denied a treble by a flying block from Carragher. The Reds are living dangerously, while Wigan are on fire!

54 Great work by Zaki as he uses his strenght to carry the ball 50 yards and ease the pressure on Wigan. The striker has been immense this afternoon.

Andrew McAlle sees Keane bagging a brace to save the Reds, while Paul Phillips hopes to see El Zhar and Benayoun during the second half.

52 Great defending by Cattermole as he clears an Agger header off the line. The flag is up anyway, but he didn't know that. Set-pieces may prove to be a potent weapon for the Reds as time wares on.

50 Pennant squeezes over a cross from the right, but Bramble nods clear. Can the Latics hold on?

Steve Bruce is reprimanded by Mr Wiley for bellowing at the match official. The Wigan chief needs to calm down - his side are leading at Anfield!

Christian Ostergaard is tipping a draw, Jamie Edgall goes 3-2 Liverpool and Daniel Andrews is questioning Mr Wright's call for Rafa's head. The game is certainly causing plenty of feedback - keep it coming!

48 Riera tries to thread a pass through to Kuyt and Bramble's interception loops dangerously towards goal. Kirkland, though, recovers his position and clutches the ball to his chest. Almost a calamitous opening for Wigan.

47 Liverpool, understandably, are on the front foot from the off. Do Wigan sit back or look for a third? That is the dilemma facing Bruce.

Colin Holden feels Steve Bruce knows just how to compete against the top four and fears Liverpool may come unstuck this afternoon. We are about to find out.

Liverpool get us up and running once again.

Chris Wright is tipping a Keane hat-trick and a 4-2 win for Liverpool, slightly ambitious maybe! Meanwhile, Carl Walster is not happy and is calling for Rafa's head! A bit harsh methinks!

Half Time Liverpool 1 Wigan 2. The Latics took the lead with the last kick of the half and Liverpool once again find themselves having to come from behind.

Goal45+2 Liverpool 1 Wigan 2. What a strike by Zaki! Valencia skips past Dossena with ease on the right and floats a cross into the heart of the box. The ball is drifting behind Zaki, but he adjusts his body perfectly to send an acrobatic volley sailing into the top corner! Anfield is stunned!

45 Pennant skips past Figueroa and picks out Riera once again. The winger really should score from eight yards out, but glances wide of the post. Another opportunity goes begging, but the Reds look dangerous every time they push forward the moment!

John Barcock is going for a 3-1 Liverpool success, while Daniel Andrews always had faith in the 'comeback kings' to come back into the game.

44 Fabulous 20-yard effort from Kuyt crashes off the crossbar. Sweet strike by the Dutchman who is unfortunate not to complete a first half turnaround. Kirkland appears to have got the slightest of touches to the ball and must, therefore, be lauded for his efforts.

43 End-to-end stuff at the moment as Valencia races clear and is unlucky not to pick out Zaki with a skidding cross.

42 Pennant wins a corner off Bramble. The winger takes the set-piece himself and finds the head of Riera. However, the Spaniard fails to make decent contact and loops an effort into the grateful arms of Kirkland.

Nathan has seen his 2-0 prediction go out the window, but remains confident that Rafa's men will come good. He is another hoping Keane will emerge from Torres' shadow and prove his worth. Not happening so far, but there is plenty of time left on the clock.

Yellow Card40 Perhaps Dossena is too fired up, as he is cautioned for a reckless challenge. He will now have to be careful on the slippery surface.

39 The crowd have found their voice after the goal and suddenly the belief is flowing through the men in red.

Goal37 GOAL! Liverpool 1 Wigan 1. I spoke too soon! Kuyt levels matters for Liverpool. Agger makes up for his earlier error with a jinking run down the left, before having the vision to pull the back to Kuyt. From six yards the Dutchman makes no mistake as he finds the bottom corner with Kirkland stranded. Game on!

36 Riera cuts in from the left flank and fires goalwards with his right foot, his swinger, and unsurprisingly drills a low effort well past the upright. It's just not happening for the Reds at the moment.

35 Good tracking back from De Ridder as he follows Riera all the way back into his own half and puts in a telling challenge. Just about sums up what Wigan have been all about this afternoon - hard work.

34 Rafa Benitez is animated on the sidelines - and who can blame him? A blur of hand signals is sent out, but will it make any difference. Something needs to be done because his side have been second best so far.

32 Liverpool looked shell-shocked and need to recover their composure. Passes are going astray and Wigan continue to pile the pressure on any red shirt with the ball at their feet.

James Thompson believes Heskey should go back to Liverpool. But as a Chelsea supporter, and not a fan of the Wigan striker, he has not got the Reds' best interests at heart.

Liverpool have come from behind to claim maximum points already this season, but can they do it. Their title credentials are facing a stern examination. There can be no arguments that Wigan deserve their lead!

Goal29 GOAL! Liverpool 0 Wigan 1. That man Zaki again. Reina gives a needless pass to Agger, who takes too long to pass the ball on and is robbed by Zaki. The African ace needs only one touch to set himself before firing into the bottom corner. Liverpool only have themselves to blame!

28 Keane, at last, comes to life. A clever run in behind is picked out by Riera and his curling effort drifts narrowly wide of the far post. A glimpse of what the former Tottenham man is capable of and he looks disappointed not to have tested Kirkland.

27 Liverpool set up camp in Wigan territory, but with open space at a premium they are crowded out on each occasion that they look to pick a path through a stubborn Wigan defence.

In response to my questioning of Keane's whereabouts, Mich Zahra believes Liverpool are in trouble if they are relying on the Irishman in Torres' absence. He could be right!

25 Wigan move the ball around impresively on the edge of the Liverpool area, but De Ridder and Palacios see attempted shots blocked by the red wall.

24 Alonso this time tries his luck from distance - but with the same result. He cathes his effort cleanly enough, and he is more than capable from 20+ yards, but only succeeds in firing wide on this occasion.

23 Liverpool survive by the skin of their teeth. Agger plays Kapo onside and the winger skips into the box and drives goalwards. Reina does well to get his body behind the ball and the keeper reacts well to get back to his feet and hammer the loose ball to safety. Wigan have not been overawed thus far and look dangerous on the counter-attack.

22 A very ambitious drive from Valencia, from all of 35-yards, crashes into Carragher. Perhaps that is what we need to liven things up - Hollywood efforts which either amaze or frustrate!

21 Pennant swings a cross towards the front post, but Kuyt cannot get in front of Bramble in order to get a touch. I seem to be mentioning Kuyt a lot, while Keane is yet to be seen! Is the Irishman on the pitch!

20 Is an interntional break hangover affecting proceedings or will the game liven up as it draws on? At the moment we have had little to get excited about!

18 The greasy surface, due to the steady rain falling on Merseyside, is helping both sets of players ping the ball around. At present, though, much of the action is restricted to the middle third, with defences very much on top.

To answer Philip Lapham's query, Heskey is only in the stands today as he is nursing a slight knock. Shame for the England man as he has recently been linked with a return to Anfield. Does anyone see that happening?

16 Carragher is alive to De Ridder's burst towards the corner flag and takes no chances by knocking the ball behind. Zaki fails to get on the end of the resulting delivery and stays down after colliding with Arbeloa.

15 Positive play again by Riera and Bramble is forced to nod behind in order to prevent Kuyt getting on the end of a pinpoint cross. The set-piece then comes to nothing.

14 Gerrard crunches into a tackle in the middle of the park, sending out a message of intent to his counterparts. No prisoners will be taken in midfield this afternoon!

13 Zaki gets his head to a long ball down the centre but ,with no team-mate in sight, the danger is easily cleared up by Carragher.

12 Scharner keeps his wits about him on this occasion and ensures his header towards Kirkland has the legs to reach the keeper. Kuyt was once again lurking and he looks lively for the hosts.

11 Wigan are yet to get the ball to their dangerman - Zaki, with the Egyptian cutting a lone furrow up front. He needs better service and men getting around him. Liverpool are unlikley to be threatened if the Latics fail to push men forward in support.

10 Scharner lays a dangerous ball back to Kirkland and the keeper has to be quick off his line to bail his centre-half out of trouble. Kuyt was alert to the possible opportunity and was only inches away from beating Kirkland to the loose pass.

9 Dossena has De Ridder under wraps down Wigan's right and the Dutchman is yet to get into the game. He does have licence to roam, so expect him to try his luck elsewhere.

8 Riera skips past Melchiot when there appeared to be no room available and his driven cross flashes across the face of goal. No red shirt is on hand, though, to provide a telling touch and the ball runs away on the far side. Good play by Riera who has impressed since arriving at Anfield.

7 Answer - Nothing. The delivery is poor and Agger is able to nod clear at the front post. Wigan have wasted a couple of early chances to get dangerous balls into the box.

6 Kapo gets the by-line following clever interplay with Palacios. Carragher comes over to cover the danger and concedes a corner. What can Wigan do here?

5 Alonso flights a free-kick towards the back post, but former Reds keeper Kirkland is on hand to pluck the ball out of the air.

4 Pennant skips past a couple of challenges, before Alonso is then sent crashing to the turf by Cattermole. Wigan look fired up this afternoon and are not going to give Liverpool and easy ride.

3 Cattermole picks up a loose ball on the edge of the box, but his 25-yard drive sails high into the crowd behind Reina's goal. Bright start by the visitors.

2 De Ridder is felled by Alonso allowing Wigan the opportunity to push men forward.

1>Wigan push Liverpool back early on, with Valencia making good progress down the right.

90 All over - and Liverpool have come from 2-0 down to beat Manchester City 3-2. City will be kicking themselves, but this is a huge win for Liverpool given where they were at half-time.

90 Dunne gets a flick to a long free-kick, but can't divert it goalwards and that's surely it now.

Yellow Card90 Arbeloa goes into the book late on.

90 Just gone a bit quiet now, with City looking beaten in truth as a couple of passes go astray and heads drop. Just a reminder my verdict pre-match was a narrow Liverpool win. Wasn't quite expecting it to pan out like this though!

90 City not giving up - there's still at least a couple of minutes left. Alonso playing at emergency centre-back for Liverpool.

90 GOAL - KUYT. Late, late drama at Eastlands - and all those positive Liverpool fans have surely got the result they predicted at half-time. Benayoun cut the ball back to Torres from the byline, the Spaniard's shot struck Dunne on the heel and Kuyt was there to lash it home.

Substitution90 Six minutes of added time will be played.

Substitution89 Skrtel leaves the field on a stretcher with his right leg in a splint. Credit to the City fans, they booed when Skrtel stayed down initially but plenty clapped him off. Both sides down to 10 now.

88 Skrtel getting something to relieve the pain here. Not an incident you'll want to see on the highlights.

87 Skrtel in real trouble after landing awkwardly following a challenge with Evans. Nothing the Welshman did wrong, but that looks to be a nasty one.

Yellow Card87 Dunne booked after catching Torres from behind. He disputes the decision, though I'm not sure why.

Substitution86 City bring Petrov on for Elano.

85 Ireland attempts a lovely reverse ball in behind Dossena as City press for an unlikely winner, but Reina is out quickly to gather before Wright-Phillips can get there.

84 Liverpool come in waves now. This time it's Keane who goes close - though he was offside in any case.

83 Dreadful cross from Dossena as he somehow manages to send the ball closer to the crowd than his team-mates in the middle.

82 Lovely link play from Gerrard and Keane presents Torres with a gilt-edged chance for his hat-trick but he skies his half-volley from three yards. Should have scored.

Substitution81 Liverpool bring Benayoun on for Riera.

Substitution80 Off goes Robinho, with Ched Evans replacing him.

79 It's all Liverpool now. Going to be a long 11 minutes for City.

78 Looks like Robinho could be on the verge of being subbed.

77 Riera curls a ball in from the left but it's much too heavy for Keane, who wanted it slid into his path in the middle.

76 City have lost all composure at the back, with Richards hacking the ball clear despite Robinho ploughing a lone furrow.

75 Sky Bet go 8/11 the draw, 11/8 Liverpool and 15/2 a Manchester City win. Shows how goals (and a red card) changes things!

74 City fans up in arms as Robinho springs the offside trap and goes down under pressure from Carragher. The referee's whistle blows...and it's a Liverpool free-kick for handball.

Goal73 GOAL - TORRES. Gerrard curls a corner in at the front post and Torres climbs unmarked to head home from close range. Bad goal for City to concede.

72 Seven goals in 11 for Keane against Manchester City. Sky Bet go 7/1 he's the next goalscorer here.

71 City going 4-4-1 now with Robinho up front alone. Unsurprisingly Liverpool have pushed Keane up with Torres.

Substitution70 Liverpool bring Keane and Dossena on for Aurelio and Mascherano.

Substitution70 City bring on Gelson Fernandes for Jo, who hobbles off holding his back.

69 Three substitutions imminent.

68 Jo goes down clutching the bottom of his back after an aerial chalenge with Skrtel. Looks like the big defender caught him with his studs as they leapt for the ball.

67 What we have we hold will surely be the City mantra now, while Liverpool will look to take advantage of the spaces that will surely come with City a man down.

Red Card66 RED CARD - ZABALETA. City down to 10 men - and Mark Hughes is furious. Zabaleta dives in on Alonso and Peter Walton has no hesitation in producing the red card. Looked a harsh decision at first glance but the benefit of a TV replay suggests he made the right call.

65 After a bright start Riera has faded pretty badly - he's just been caught offside after straying beyond the last defender despite being able to look right along the line.

64 Brilliant from Wright-Phillips as he bursts into the Liverpool box down the inside-right channel and stands a lovely ball up for Robinho. It looks odds-on a goal but the stretching Brazilian volleys over from around three yards out. He was offside, but the flag wasn't up so the goal would have stood. Could be costly.

63 Bit of a scrappy spell, but Dunne continues to stand firm whenever Liverpool try to probe centrally.

62 After a mistake from Arbeloa, Ireland slips the ball through to Robinho who advances one-on-one with Reina...but the flag is up and rightly so. City looking much more confident now.

61 Robinho's hit-and-miss performance continues as he sells Garrido short.

60 Torres climbs to meet the Gerrard corner but Richards' proximity means the Spaniard can only head it over.

59 Liverpool convert the free-kick into a corner.

58 Dunne penalised for a clumsy challenge on Torres out wide. Good crossing chance for Liverpool.

57 It's Liverpool voices ringing around the stadium - can City take the sting out of this Reds revival?

56 So is that the start of another Liverpool comeback or can City pick themselves up and get back to their form of the closing stages of the first half?

Goal55 GOAL - TORRES. Liverpool right back in it and it's that man Torres! You can't keep a great striker down. Great link play from Gerrard and Arbeloa down the right and the latter's cross was perfect for Torres to turn home from six yards out. Game on.

54 Richards comes across to halt Gerrard's progress down the Liverpool right. Really impressive from the City central defensive pairing - Torres has been very quiet as has Gerrard.

53 City just struggling to find their footing in the second half. Robinho has the chance to slide in Garrido down the left but his ball is a poor one and Liverpool clear.

52 Gerrard whips the ball in from the right but it's a poor one and all too easy for Hart to gather.

51 City playing a fluid 4-5-1 formation when defending and 4-3-3 when attacking. The workrate of Robinho and Wright-Phillips crucial in making it work.

50 John-Lee Ashworth won't buy into the Liverpool comeback talk. He writes: "Liverpool are dangerous coming from behind but this will not be one of them moments. City for the win 3-1 or 4-1. Robinho is yet to score and will in this game."

49 After a good spell of Liverpool possession, Mascherano fires in a shot from distance but it's always sailing wide. City will be pretty happy if they keep Liverpool to long-range shots.

48 Arbeloa sends a cross in from the right but once again Dunne is there to clear. Still a way to go but Dunne is heading for the man-of-the-match award here. He's yet to put a foot wrong.

47 Whatever Benitez said at the break seems to have fired Liverpool up - they're back to the side that dominated possession early in the first half. Will it last, though?

46 Kuyt not impressed with that decision at all - he's still shaking his head a good minute after the incident. TV replays suggest their was contact so Kuyt's head-shaking is understandable.

46 Just seconds after the break and Kuyt goes down in the City box under pressure from Dunne. Looks a penalty at first glance but Peter Walton waves play on.

45 Back under way.

45 No changes at the break for either side. Surprised Benitez hasn't thrown Keane on. In fact none of the Liverpool subs were out on the pitch at half-time warming up.

Unity in Manchester as Vinnie Lombard writes: "Man Utd fan here. I hope Liverpool get stuffed by two more in the second half. They are a medicore side that got a start that flattered them. Keane is a nothing player obviously with no ambition because if he had he would have stayed with the better team."

Have to say I'm impressed with the positivity of the Liverpool fans at the break. Sheena McStravick and Jake Craggs still both confidently predicting Reds victories.

City fan Paul Denham reckons: "Now people realise we can challenge for honours this year. Wright-Phillips for England again."

Jacob Coles writes: "I think it will be hard for Liverpool to come back as City look defensively sound. I'd take Kuyt off since there isn't any point of good work-rate if he doesn't do anything with it."

Fredy from Germany fancies 4-2 or 5-2 to Liverpool, while Mark Doyle fancies the Reds to get a draw at least.

Anyone willing to write Liverpool off? David Workman writes: "Liverpool are the comeback kings. Remember the Champions League final? 3-0 down at half-time, ended up winning. Liverpool are fantastic at chasing games. 2-3 to Liverpool, Torres hat-trick."

Quite some change in the betting markets after that first 45 minutes. City - 9/4 pre-match - are now 2/13, with Liverpool out from 5/4 to 11/1 and the draw now a 5/1 shot. Andrew's 4-2 win for Liverpool is a 50/1 shot.

Half Time45 That's half-time and it's 2-0 to Manchester City. Liverpool had so much of the ball in the early stages it looked like they were in for a comfortable afternoon but after Kuyt ballooned that shot they seem to have retreated into their shells and City have taken the game by the scruff of the neck in style.

45 Andrew Thompson is one confident Liverpool fan. He writes: "They might be 2-0 down but they will still win 4-2. Keane to come off bench and get one, Torres to get a hat-trick." Have to say I'd be stunned if Keane is still on the bench come the restart, but that's a bold score prediction...

45 One minuted of added time.

44 Wright-Phillips pounces on a Skrtel error but just can't thread the ball through to Robinho and Liverpool clear.

43 More great defending from Dunne as he nicks the ball off Riera's toes. Flag up in any case with the Spaniard offside but Dunne wasn't to know that.

42 That's my pre-match prediction out of the window, then. Credit to City, I've been impressed.

Goal41 GOAL - GARRIDO. Turns out to be something more than a good crossing chance! With Petrov only on the bench, Garrido steps up to take it and curls it over the wall and into the top corner. It's a peach of a free-kick and Liverpool have a mountain to climb.

40 City break down the right and Wright-Phillips cuts inside, earning a free-kick as Aurelio and Riera combine to bring him down. Good crossing chance for City, this.

39 Riera works himself another crossing opportunity and fizzes it across. Kuyt holds back his run this time, but the ball flies past his outstretched leg and skips out for a throw.

38 The tempo has just dropped a little as we approach half-time - City obviously happy with what they've got and Liverpool still struggling to break them down.

37 Alonso rifles in a shot from distance but it's straight down Hart's throat. Credit to City's defence, since Kuyt's ballooned shot they've restricted Liverpool to long-range efforts.

36 Arbeloa seeing increased amounts of the ball down the right, but this time Garrido gets across to turn it away for a throw.

35 City fans must be happy with how this is panning out. Dunne and Richards look imperious at the back so far.

34 The corner comes to nothing initially and even Torres can't find a way through as Zabaleta jockeys him superbly before nicking the ball away.

33 Corner for Liverpool as Arbeloa's cross is turned behind by Garrido. The visitors are getting into some decent positions but City's defence is holding firm so far.

32 Much better from Liverpool as they string a couple of decent passes together to give Gerrard a crossing chance from the right but Dunne is across quickly and deflects it back to Hart.

31 Mascherano attempts an ambitious angled ball from deep but it's awful and skips straight out for a goal-kick - symptomatic of Liverpool's passing since the Ireland goal that.

30 Liverpool spring forward quickly and force a corner down the left - where most of their positive play has come - but it comes to nothing. Boos ring around the stadium as Carragher isn't penalised for a robust challenge on Robinho but Richards then executes a similarly strong tackle on Riera and the City fans respond with a chorus of cheers.

29 Robinho has a great chance to slide the unmarked Wright-Phillips in down the inside-right channel but overhits the pass and the chance goes. Had he weighted that right Wright-Phillips would surely have found the target at the very least.

28 Zabaleta slips initially then recovers well to block a Riera cross as a couple of Liverpool fans point out their side came from a goal down against City's cross-town rivals earlier this season. Certainly not time to panic just yet.

27 By definition goals change games but Liverpool seem to be struggling to string passes together in the same way as before City's goal. Cue a Liverpool goal...

26 Jake Craggs writes: "Bad start for Liverpool, however scrappy and unlucky the goal was, they must put their heads together and get back into the game. Carragher must keep the defence tight, and Gerrard influence the team, Kuyt will also be a good influence with his high work rate and closing down."

26 Garrido curls a somewhat hopeful ball in from the left and Reina gathers at the second attempt.

25 Alex Pinto has words of praise for City's goalscorer. He writes: "Stephen Ireland is one of the revelations of the Premier League season. As a City fan I had my reservations about his ability but he's proved me - and a lot of people - wrong."

24 Entertaining stuff this - got a nice ebb and flow to it. City break forward and Elano fires in a shot, but it's well wide.

23 Terrible corner from Gerrard is cleared at the front post but once again it's Liverpool feeding on the scraps. They work a crossing opportunity from the left but it's straight into Hart's arms.

22 Gerrard curls a free-kick into the City box which Garrido clears. Mascherano works it back into the area towards Gerrard but Ireland is across well to clear albeit at the expense of a corner.

21 That's the first goal Liverpool have conceded away from home in the Premier League this season - a new test of their title credentials.

20 Liverpool have dominated possession so far but goals change games and Ireland has put City on top now.

Goal19 GOAL - IRELAND. City in front. Scrappy in the build-up as Jo can't get Wright-Phillips' cutback under control but Arbeloa's clearance is only as far as Ireland and he lashes home.

18 Robinho somehow wriggles his way into the Liverpool box down the left but his prodded cross is gathered at the second attempt by Reina. Skrtel dived in early on Robinho there and nearly paid the price.

18 City spring forward themselves but Robinho's long-range effort is once again gathered by Reina in the Liverpool goal.

17 Riera looking really lively against his former club here. Now he's got down the left, evaded a couple of tackles and turned the ball across only for Kuyt to balloon the ball well over the bar. It was on his unfavoured left foot, but he should have done better.

16 Jake Craggs writes: "If Liverpool get the first goal, possession is key in the back four, Carragher and Skrtel must stay alert and keep Robinho out of the game. Liverpool will run out with a cosy 1 - 0 win. Keane to come on on 65 and net the winner."

16 Elano pulls the corner back towards the edge of the box but Liverpool clear before Wright-Phillips can get there. The visitors break on the counter-attack but Wright-Phillips tracks back superbly to turn the ball out for a throw.

15 City force a corner as Riera tracks back with Zabaleta to turn the ball behind.

14 Skrtel bangs in a shot from distance but it's straight down Hart's throat. City slow to close down there.

14 Bit of blood coming from Zabaleta's nose but it's nothing to worry about - he's quickly back into the fray.

13 Riera skips away from a couple of challenges down the left but Richards comes across to slide in and turn the ball away. Great tackle. Zabaleta just needs a spot of treatment after taking a blow in the face.

13 Gerrard has a decent crossing chance from the right but the ball in sails behind the City goal.

12 Reina slips momentarily as Robinho chases down another diagonal ball, but the Spaniard reacts quickly to gather unchallenged. Arbeloa tracked the run in any case.

11 Much better from City, this. A diagonal ball breaks into the path of Robinho around 20 yards out and he fires in a shot, but it's straight at Reina.

10 Zabaleta gets a yard of space from the free-kick, but his cross is well gathered by Reina inside his six-yard box.

10 Mascherano penalised after tripping Elano in midfield. Looks like City have finally settled into their task here.

9 Wright-Phillips finally gets on the ball and puts Liverpool on the back foot, forcing a throw in Reds territory. It comes to nothing, though.

8 Worrying start for those tipping a City win - they just can't get on the ball right now.

7 Torres tries to slide the ball out wide to the left to Riera, but it just skips away from the Spaniard. One nil to the weather there - last night's downpour in Manchester means the pitch is a slick one.

6 Rafa Benitez already prowling his technical area - and that despite Liverpool settling much the better!

5 Gerrard's corner is met by Skrtel but the big defender can't get his header on target and it sails behind for a goal-kick.

4 Liverpool have settled much better here - indeed they've forced an early corner with Riera's shot spiled behind by Hart.

3 Torres spins away from Zabaleta and looks to advance on the City goal, but Dunne halts his progress with a typically no-nonsense challenge around 25 yards out.

2 Liverpool get the first bit of quality possession and Riera nutmegs Zabaleta to get a crossing chance against his former side. He stands the ball up well enough towards the back post, but it falls behind Kuyt and City carry it clear.

1 Scrappy start with both sides giving it away with long balls forward.

0 Under way here at the City of Manchester Stadium, with City getting us under way on Peter Walton's first whistle.

FT The referee blows his whistle for full-time and Liverpool have beaten Everton 2-0. The Reds have produced a great display and they will hope to use this as a springboard for the rest of the season.

90 Fellaini's long ball forward is cleared by a strong header from Skrtel on the edge of the Liverpool box. It has been a very impressive defensive display for the Reds.

90 Liverpool will be buoyed by their success today. Torres produced a great two goal salvo and Keane is starting to look like the player we remember from Tottenham.

90 There will be three minutes of additional time.

89 Saha sends a rasping shot narrowly wide of Reina's right hand post. That was a great effort.

88 Lescott's driven effort from the edge of the Liverpool box is blocked by Carragher as Everton once again fail to trouble Reina.

87 Gerrard sends a free-kick from the edge of the Everton box high over the top of Howard's bar.

Substitution86 Liverpool make a double change with Jermaine Pennant and Lucas taking the place of Keane and Alonso.

85 Aurelio sends the corner from the left all the way back to Dossena on the halfway and Liverpool look to mount another spell of possession.

84 Gerrard's curling effort from 25 yards is turned around his right hand post by Reina. Liverpool have a corner.

83 Liverpool are still keeping the ball with ease. It looks like they will be quite happy to wind down the clock in the remaining minutes of this game.

82 Liverpool are now keeping possession for fun. I think Everton's chances of getting back into this match are over.

81 Dossena's looping cross from the left is cleared away from the Everton box by a strong header from Yobo.

Red Card80 Cahill catches Alonso with a very poor tackle and is sent-off by the referee. That decision is a bit harsh but the Everton midfielder was late with the challenge.

78 Saha has failed to get involved since his introduction into this match. Everton will need him to shine if they are to find a way back into the game.

77 Fellaini turns Lescott's driven cross from the left narrowly wide of Reina's left hand post. That was one of Everton's better chances.

Yellow Card76 Arbeloa catches Cahill with a very loose challenge and is rightly booked by the referee.

75 Liverpool are enjoying a sustained spell of possession at the moment. They are looking very secure with their two goal lead.

74 Fellaini and Skrtel are both pulling each others shirts as an Everton cross goes into the Liverpool box. Play continues.

73 Torres looks to make space in the Everton box, however his jinking run is ended by a very strong challenge from Jagielka. Liverpool's two goal hero now looks full of confidence.

72 Aurelio sees his powerful effort from 30 yards charged down by Yobo. Wasted effort from the Liverpool sub.

71 Arteta's corner from the right is headed away from danger by Kuyt on the edge of his six-yard box. Great defending from Liverpool.

70 Liverpool have started to sit back since Torres' second goal. They look comfortable at the moment but Everton will want to change that.

68 Everton are pushing to get a goal back at the moment, however they have yet to fashion any clear-cut chances.

Substitution67 Liverpool make their first change of the match with Fabio Aurelio taking the place of Riera.

66 The resulting corner from the left falls to Torres at the far post. The Liverpool striker fires tha ball home but once again the goal is ruled out. This time Kuyt gave away a foul in the box.

65 Kuyt turns Riera's cross from the left into the back of the Everton net, however the goal is ruled out as the ball had already gone out of play for a Liverpool corner.

Substitution65 Everton make their first change with Louis Saha taking the place of Hibbert.

Yellow Card64 Nevile is booked for a clumsy challenge as Everton start to grow frustrated following Liverpool's two goal salvo.

Goal62 GOAL TORRES! Jagielka wins the ball from Kuyt with a very strong challenge in the Everton box, however Torres picks up possession. The Liverpool striker fires home with a neat effort to give his side a 2-0 lead. Could that be game over?

61 Cahill wins the ball from Gerrard with a very strong challenge on the halfway line.

60 The Liverpool fans are now making their voices heard. Kuyt deserves credit for taking Lescott away from Torres as Keane's cross arrived in the box.

Goal59 GOAL TORRES! Keane's cross from the left falls to the unmarked Torres on the edge of the Everton six-yard box. The Liverpool striker proceeds to send a neat effort under Howard's body to give Liverpool the lead.

57 Fellaini does superbly to outmuscle Kuyt on the halfway line and bring the ball into the Liverpool half. Good play from the Everton new boy.

56 Reina races off his line and produces a fantastic punch to clear the ball away from the Liverpool box.

55 Lescott takes the ball round Skrtel but is unable to keep the ball in play on the left flank.

54 Riera sends a very poor effort well wide of Howard's right hand post. Liverpool are on top at the start of this half.

53 Gerrard's skidding effort drifts narrowly wide of Howard's right hand post. That was the best shot of the match so far.

52 Lescott does well to knock the ball out of play for a Liverpool throw-in under pressure from Riera. Yet more good defending from Everton.

51 Torres makes space on the edge of the Everton box and sends a weak shot straight at Howard. Decent start to this half.

Yellow Card50 Torres now finds his way into the referee's notebook after he shows dissent to the linesman. Another good decision from the referee.

Yellow Card49 Yakubu falls to the ground as he tries to catch Skrtel's leg. The referee is not impressed and rightly books the Everton striker.

48 Gerrard's lofted ball into the Everton box is easily cleared by Jagielka.

47 The majority of you getting in contact with me think that Liverpool will win this game. Let me know if you agree of disagree by sending an e-mail to nick.hext@bskyb.com.

46 The action is back under way as Reina's long ball forward drifts out of play for an Everton throw-in.

Half TimeHT The referee blows his whistle for half-time. Not much to report from the opening period with plenty of effort from both sides but not much quality.

45 The referee gives a free-kick as Arteta sends a corner from the right into the Liverpool box. There will be one minute of additional time.

44 Yakubu drags his effort from 30 yards narrowly wide of Reina's left hand post. A rare glimpse of goal for the Everton striker.

43 Gerrard's corner from the left is headed away by Fellaini at his near post. Both defences deserve plenty of credit for their displays so far.

42 Lescott clears Keane's driven cross from the left away from the Everton box.

41 Neville does really well to win the ball from Torres from the edge of the Everton box.

40 Yakubu is caught offside as he looks to win the ball from Carragher just inside the Liverpool half.

39 Liverpool are enjoying a sustained spell of possession in their own half. They are causing Everton no real problems, however they are taking some of the sting out of this match.

Yellow Card38 Fellaini storms forward until he is knocked to the ground by Alonso. The Liverpool midfielder is rightly booked.

37 Xabi Alonso does well to usher the ball out of play under pressure from Fellaini. Even game at the moment.

36 Yakubu bundles Carragher to the ground to give Liverpool a free-kick on the edge of their own box.

35 Arteta's long ball forward is headed away from the Liverpool box by Skrtel. The Reds centre-half has been one of the best players on the pitch so far.

34 Howard races out of his goal to dribble the ball away from Kuyt on the right flank. Good stuff from the Everton keeper.

33 The temperature is rising at Goodison Park. Both sides are showing 100 per cent commitment with every challenge and it is very hard to pick a winner.

32 Yobo does well to cut-out Gerrard's attempted through ball on the edge of the Everton box.

31 The referee is warning Torres after he showed a bit of dissent. The Liverpool striker is slightly lucky not to be booked.

30 The entertainment level in this match has gone up in the last few minutes. Everton are starting to go for it and they are causing Liverpool a few problems.

29 Reina does really well to claim Osman's cross from the left with ease on the edge of his six-yard box. Everton are on top.

28 Fellaini outmuscles Reina and with almost the whole goal to aim for he fires the ball straight at Carragher. The referee, however, feels the Everton midfielder fouled the keeper and awards a free-kick.

27 Cahill is penalised by the referee for a clumsy challenge on Carragher. That was the correct decision.

26 Cahill sees a powerful effort bravely blocked by Arbeloa in the Liverpool box. Everton are enjoying a decent spell of pressure.

25 Osman makes space on the right flank and sends a dangerous cross narrowly wide of everyone in the Liverpool box. Good play from the Everton midfielder.

24 Skrtel beats Cahill in the air and heads the ball away from the Liverpool box.

23 Keane fails to make the most of a half-chance in the Everton box and the home side are able to clear the danger. The Liverpool striker hasn't managed to get involved in this match so far.

22 I have been impressed with Riera so far. The Liverpool winger looks like he could have a big role to play for the Reds this season.

21 Arteta's driven cross from the right is headed away from danger by Skrtel at his near post. The tempo of this game is starting to rise.

20 The referee waves play-on after Dirk Kuyt caught Fellaini with a poor challenge. Good work from the official.

19 Riera's driven effort from the left hand angle of the Everton box goes narrowly over the top of Howard's bar. Liverpool are on top at the moment.

18 Torres' powerful close-range effort is bravely blocked by Jagielka. The Liverpool striker could have done better with that chance.

17 Keane's cross from the left is cleared away from danger by a strong header from Joseph Yobo. Good defending from both sides so far.

16 Everton fail to work a neat free-kick as Leon Osman's attempted lofted pass bounces off the head of Arbeloa and away from danger.

15 Andrea Dossena's bustling run down the left flank is halted by a strong challenge from Tony Hibbert.

14 Arteta's corner from the left falls to Cahill in the Liverpool box. The Everton midfielder, however, stumbles and his weak shot causes Reina no problems.

13 Arbeloa knocks Fellaini to the ground to give Everton a free-kick on the edge of their own box. Scrappy stuff at the moment.

12 Jagielka does really well to usher Torres away from the Everton goal. That great defending has won the home side a goal-kick.

11 Joleon Lescott's ball down the left flank is cut-out by Arbeloa. Loose pass from the Everton defender.

10 It has been a very even start to this game. Neither side have looked like taking the lead as the majority of the action takes place in the midfield. Let me know your view by sending an e-mail to nick.hext@bskyb.com.

9 Marouane Fellaini knocks Alvaro Arbeola to the ground to give Liverpool a free-kick. The Everton midfielder is booked.

8 Steven Gerrard sends a lofted cross from the left out of play for an Everton goal-kick.

7 Nath Mills thinks we will see a Robbie Keane hat-trick today. The Liverpool striker will need to start getting more involved if that prediction is to come true.

6 Albert Riera's cross from the left is headed away from the edge of the Everton six-yard box by Phil Jagielka. Riera has made a bright start to the game.

5 Cahill is caught offisde as Skrtel heads the ball away from the Liverpool box. Even start to this match.

4 Martin Skrtel shoves Yakubu and Reina is able to collect the loose ball in the Liverpool box. Decent penalty shout for Everton.

3 Torres is bundled to the ground by Phil Neville to give Liverpool a free-kick just inside the Everton half. Plenty of noise from the crowd so far.

2 Tim Howard races out of his goal to claim the ball at the feet of the onrushing Fernando Torres. Quick start to this match.

1 We are under way. Jose Reina has the sun in his eyes as Everton look to cause some problems early on.

Stoke earn a famous point after frustrating Liverpool to secure a goalless draw at Anfield.

93 Gerrard has probably the last chance of the game, but he fires his shot over the crossbar to groans all around Anfield.

91 Fuller is booked for kicking out at Carragher.

90 Gerrard has another sight of goal, but he drags his shot wide of the target.

90 There will be three minutes added on at the end of the 90 minutes.

89 Fantastic defensive header from Griffin denies Torres getting on the end of Gerrard's cross.

87 Liverpool win another corner but Stoke again deal with superbly.

Yellow Card85 Skrtel is booked for a late tackle on Fuller.

83 Torres has a good chance when he works his way past Griffin only to fire his shot over the top.

80 Delap's effort is deflected and Stoke are then caught offside.

80 Stoke win a dangerous free-kick on the edge of the box as Fuller goes down under a challenge from Arbeloa.

78 Another hopeful effort as Alonso curls a shot into the arms of Sorensen.

77 Gerrard has a tired-looking effort as the ball drops to him on the edge of the box, but he hits his left-footed volley well wide.

Substitution77 Ricardo Fuller comes on for Dave Kitson in Stoke's final change of the game.

76 There are groans around Anfield as Dossena wastes a cross from the left by sending it into the crowd.

75 It looks like Liverpool are running out of ideas as Gerrard sees another deflected wide for another corner.

72 Gerrard tries his luck from the edge of the box, but his shot sails over the crossbar as Stoke are continuing to frustrate the home side.

71 Keane comes off for Yossi Benayoun meaning the striker will have to wait a little longer before he scores his first goal for his new club.

70 Stoke are 20 minutes away from a fabulous point as Jamie Carragher lines up a shot from the edge of the box which he curls just wide.

68 Gerrard flights in a free-kick from the left which flies just inches wide of the far post as Liverpool are again frustrated in their attempts to break the deadlock.

66 Kuyt has two chances in a minute when he sees his first shot saved by Sorensen and seconds later he curls his left-footed effort wide of the target.

Substitution65 Richard Cresswell comes on for Liam Lawrence as Stoke make their second change of the contest.

Substitution63 Ryan Babel comes on Riera in Liverpool's first change of the game.

63 Torres is denied the opener when Cort makes a superb block to keep out his goalbound shot.

62 Kuyt sends over a dangerous cross from the right, but Sorensen is down smartly to collect the ball from under the nose of Keane.

60 Stoke win a corner as Delap sees his cross blocked by Arbeloa, but Cort directs his header into the arms of Reina.

58 Wasteful again from Liverpool as Riera sends his cross from the left into the Kop much to the disappointment of the home fans.

56 Torres tries to burst into the box, but he only manages to overrun the ball for a goalkick.

54 Torres has a great chance to score when he rises highest to meet Arbeloa's cross only to power his header inches wide of the target.

53 Liverpool win their 11th corner of the game as they look to find the opener, but again Stoke clear the danger.

52 Delap's second long throw-in of the game causes panic in the Liverpool defence and Dossena is forced to concede a corner.

51 Keane goes close to finally breaking his duck when Arbeloa breaks down the right and crosses for the Irishman who connects with his volley, but it flies straight at Sorensen.

49 Riera gets on the end of Gerrard's corner but can only flick his header wide of the target.

46 Stoke have a chance, but Lawrence is adjudged to be offside much to the relief of the home fans.

46 Liverpool get the second half underway hoping for a much improved performance.

Both sides are back out for the restart and there are no changes from either side.

Liverpool fans Carlos Banks and Michael Spiller want Ryan Babel brought on for Kuyt, but there appears to be no changes as Liverpool are already back on the pitch ready for the second-half.

Half Time Changes Should Rafa Benitez make any changes to his side as he looks to break the deadlock? Do you think Tony Pulis will be tempted to make any alterations to his side? Email me at peter.o'rourke@bskyb.com to let me know your thoughts.

Half Time Referee Andre Marriner brings the first-half to an end and it is goalless at Anfield. Stoke deserve credit for frustrating Liverpool, but the home must do more with all the possession they are having.

45 Delap has his first long throw-in opportunity and he delivers into the box, but Reina is off his line to claim the ball.

45 There will be two minutes of added time at the end of the first-half and Stoke have done well in frustrating Liverpool.

44 I wish had bought corners on the spread as Liverpool win yet another corner, but Stoke again repel the home side's pressure.

41 Griffin is penalised for handball in charging down Riera's cross giving Gerrard a chance to flight in a free-kick which cleared by Sorensen.

40 Rafa Benitez is showing signs of frustration after Alonso wastes a free-kick by overhitting it out of play.

38 Lawrence has another chance to send in a cross, but he hits the ball too close to Reina who quickly sets Liverpool away on another attack.

37 Liverpool are dominating proceedings but all too often their final ball is not good enough.

36 Alonso has his fourth shot of the game so far, but his volley flies well wide of the target as the Stoke fans offer support to their team.

33 Gerrard fires in a cross into the box which Kuyt flicks wide of the target as Liverpool look to make the crucial breakthrough. Can Stoke continue to hold out?

32 Kuyt has a sight of goal when he is teed up by Riera, but the Dutchman drags his shot horribly wide.

31 Stoke are finding it hard to get inside Liverpool's half, but they are restricting the home side from creating too many clear goalscoring opportunities.

28 Gerrard works a short corner with Alonso and the Spaniard fires in a fierce shot which is turned round the post by Sorensen.

25 Lawrence wastes a chance to put the Liverpool defence under pressure when he flights a free-kick straight into the arms of Pepe Reina.

25 Cort does well in his first involvement as he denies Torres as he looks to get a shot in on goal.

24 Gerrard slips on the edge of the box as he lines up a shot as Stoke clear the danger.

Substitution21 Cort does come on for the injured Sonko which is a major blow for Stoke so early in the game.

Substitution20 Sonko is struggling with a knock and it looks like he may be forced off and Leon Cort is warming up on the sidelines.

18 Alonso has an ambitious effort from fully 30 yards but his shot fails to trouble Sorensen.

mins="17">Delap is down with a knock and Tony Pulis will be keen to see him continue with his long throw-ins.

15 Riera sends over a dangerous cross from the left, but both Torres and Keane fail to get on the end of it.

12 Gerrard tees up Alonso on the edge of the box, but the Spaniard slices his shot well wide of the target.

10 Liverpool win a free-kick 30 yards from goal after Keane is brought down by Faye and Gerrard goes for goal, but his shot is comfortably saved by Sorensen.

One-way traffic so far, but it remains 0-0 at Anfield.

6 Not surprisingly Liverpool are enjoying all the possession and Keane has a chance when he is picked out by Kuyt, but he fires his shot straight at Thomas Sorensen.

4 Kitson has Stoke's first effort of the game with a shot from the edge of the box which flies over the crossbar.

2 Offside: Liverpool have a goal disallowed for offside as Gerrard flights in a free-kick which goes straight into the net but the goal is chalked off for offside against Kuyt.

1 Liverpool win a free-kick when Sonko fouls Torres wide on the left as the home side look to make an early impact.

1 Kick-off: Stoke get the game underway attacking the Kop end in glorious sunshine at Anfield.

Great BABEL goal

by vietmoment

90 And there is the final whistle. Benitez has his first league win over Ferguson and United and, after a cracking second-half display, few could argue with the result. Questions will be asked about the defending for all three goals, but Liverpool won't care now.

90 One last chance for United here as the ball breaks to Rooney on the edge of the box, but his shot flies wide and knocks over a steward. Funny, but not what was intended.

90 Terrible corner from Nani, headed out for a throw. Van der Sar has to leg it back to his goal.

90 Gerrard concedes a corner. Van der Sar's up for this one.

90 Should be all over. Babel gets to the byline and tees up Kuty less than six yards from goal, but the Dutchman's shot is blocked by van der Sar. Half the four added minutes have elapsed, and United are still just about in the game.

90 Gerrard goes for goal from the free-kick even though it's over 30 yards from goal, and the ball almost deflects into the path of Keane. But he can't get a significant contact on the ball and United have a goal-kick.

Red Card90 Vidic gets his marching orders after clattering Alonso. Webb shows Vidic a second yellow and - eventually - the red. It was a poor challenge from Vidic as the pair contested a high ball.

89 Kuyt, Arbeloa and Babel combine to keep the ball down by the corner flag and eat up valuable seconds.

88 United struggling to find a way through an organised and resilient Liverpool rearguard here.

Substitution87 Babel doesn't need the stretcher, but he is replaced by Sami Hyypia.

86 Mascherano is down again and receiving treatment. The stretcher is brought onto the field, but I'm not sure it's going to be needed.

85 Liverpool were poised to make their final substitution and replace Keane with David Ngog, but Benitez makes a late decision to wait because Mascherano has picked up a knock.

84 Hargreaves is fouled in midfield by Keane, who escapes with a talking to from Webb.

83 Vidic and Ferdinand are stranded upfield as Reina gathers a cross and quickly clears the ball to Babel. He gets away from Brown and cuts the ball back to Keane, whose shot is blocked. United forced to take risks now, and they're leaving gaps at the back.

82 The free-kick is pumped into the area where Evra is on hand to clear.

Yellow Card81 Mascherano breaks for Liverpool and is bundled to the ground by Nani. Slightly theatrical fall by Mascherano, but a clear foul. The booking is perhaps harsh on Nani, though.

81 Rooney bustles his way into the Liverpool area but his shot is blocked by Carragher.

80 Liverpool waste the free-kick, but are now just 10 minutes away from a massive three points.

Yellow Card79 Evra gives the ball away, and Keane is set clear. He knocks the ball past Vidic, who trips the Irishman. Only the presence of Ferdinand trying to get back behind Vidic can have saved the United defender from a red card. Webb shows yellow, and that's probably just about the right decision.

Substitution78 Nani replaces Anderson, and United need him to do what Babel has done for Liverpool.

Goal77 GOAL - BABEL. Supersub does it for Liverpool, who are full value for this lead. Giggs tries to shepherd the ball out but is mugged by Mascherano. The ball breaks to Kuyt who cuts the ball back for Babel who shoots into the ground and up into the top corner. Liverpool lead 2-1 with under a quarter of an hour to go.

76 Arbeloa swings in a decent cross from the right, but Ferdinand stands firm to head clear with Keane lurking at the back post.

75 United are getting ready to make a final change. Nani's introduction is imminent.

74 Babel jinks his way into the United area, but can't find a way to therad a pass through for Mascherano.

73 Babel miscontrols and allows Ferdinand to get the ball clear for a throw.

Substitution72 Riera's Liverpool debut comes to an end. He started slowly but grew in confidence and influence as the game progressed. Ryan Babel replaces him on the left.

71 The corner comes to nothing for United.

70 Stunning effort from Giggs, who nicks the ball away from Gerrard before sending a dipping left-foot volley goalwards from 25 yards. Reina has to be on guard to backpedal and tip the ball over the bar for a corner. The closest United have come since half-time.

69 Giggs crosses low from the left but it evades Rooney and Tevez, and is cleared before it reaches Berbatov at the back post.

Substitution68 Twenty-three minutes for Gerrard to win this game for Liverpool, then, as he comes on for the lively Benayoun.

67 Activity on the Liverpool bench as well now, with Gerrard getting ready to come on.

Substitution66 Second change for United as Hargreaves replaces Scholes, who hasn't made much impression in this one-sided second period.

66 A combination of Rooney and Brown dispossesses Kuyt on the Liverpool left.

64 Carrick has hobbled back to the United bench, on crutches and with a plastic boot thing covering his right foot and ankle.

63 Keane works some space on the left and turns the ball back into the path of Aurelio, but his cross is cleared.

62 Skrtel goes for goal from distance but rifles the ball straight down van der Sar's throat. Van der Sar shanks his kick into touch, but Liverpool fail to capitalise.

61 Gerrard and Torres are both warming up on the touchline, but they're pretty gentle warm-ups at the moment. Gerrard, in fact, seemed to be just watching the game.

60 Reina comes a long way to deal with a Giggs free-kick from the left, and can only get the slightest contact. He scurries out to the left-back position to complete the clearance.

59 Aurelio is flagged offside on the left, but he and Riera have been a constant threat on that flank for the home side. Worryingly for United, Berbatov is currently off the pitch having treatment to his right knee.

58 Riera has a cheeky go for goal from distance, but van der Sar is alive to the danger and gathers the ball under his crossbar.

57 The corner is played short before the ball eventually finds Kuyt on the right. He drills the ball low across the six-yard line, but Keane can't make any contact with a reflex shot seven yards out. Just not happening for Keane yet at Liverpool.

56 Benayoun times his run into the box perfectly to stay onside and burst into the United box, but van der Sar is out smartly to smuggle the ball behind for a corner.

55 Wasteful from Kuyt, who shoots tamely straight at van der Sar from 30 yards when he had options left and right.

54 Kuyt chests the ball into the path of Alonso 30 yards from goal, and the Spanish midfielder lashes his shot high over the bar.

53 United's first chance of note in the second half is sliced wide by Scholes from 20 yards. Decent chance for a player who strikes the ball as well as Scholes can.

53 Anderson gives the ball away to Benayoun, who releases Keane on the right. His cross is aimed for Benayoun, who'd continued his run, but Evra heads clear.

52 More good play from Liverpool but Riera can't find a fitting cross to end a flowing move. Goal-kick United.

51 This bright start has got the home fans on their feet. Liverpool need to keep the momentum going here. Will Rafa risk Gerrard or Torres at 1-1?

50 Keane's dinked cross is flicked on by Kuyt and just behind Benayoun. Unlucky for Liverpool, but they've started much the better in this second half.

49 Alonso fails to clear the first man, Berbatov, and United get the ball clear.

48 Good start to the second half by Liverpool, attacking the Kop End. Riera forces Vidic to concede another corner.

48 Better handling from van der Sar this time, confidently gathering the corner.

47 Keane plays in Riera on the left, and his low cross is deflected out of Vidic's reach but, luckily for United, Evra is on hand to divert the ball behind with Kuyt waiting for a tap-in. Excellent full-back play.

47 Tevez releases Giggs on the left but is penalised for a push.

46 Liverpool get the second half under way at Anfield.

Substitution Giggs replaces Carrick, so Anderson will presumably tuck inside alongside Scholes.

Sky Bet now make the draw 11/10 favourite in their in-running market. Dimitar Berbatov is still 9/1 to score the next goal despite being a "quite awful result" according to the layers.

Giggs and Hargreaves are warming up on the pitch during the half-time break. Hargreaves still has his bib on, and Giggs doesn't. If that means anything. Hargreaves, of course, would be the natural replacement for Carrick if that injury keeps him off for the second half.

Half Time45 And that's the last action of the half as Webb blows the whistle. Cracking first 45 minutes. United started brilliantly, but Liverpool have been far better since being gifted an equaliser. Let me know your thoughts on the game - email me on Dave.Tickner@bskyb.com

45 United work the ball neatly on the right-hand side, but Rooney's cross is just too high for Berbatov.

45 Berbatov is penalised for a foul on Arbeloa as they contest a long ball over the top. The Bulgarian gives the referee a suspicious, wounded look that will be familiar to Spurs fans.

45 The ball drops for Kuyt on the edge of the box, but his shot lacks power and is easily claimed by van der Sar. We're just entering a minimum of two added minutes now at the end of an absorbing first half.

45 Liverpool playing some much better football since that rather fortunate leveller. A sweeping move the length and width of the pitch ends with Arbeloa's cross from the right being cleared by Ferdinand.

44 It looks like Carrick will see out the half, but he's clearly struggling and may not reappear for the second period.

43 Berbatov dinks the ball over the top for Rooney, whose first touch is superb before three Liverpool defenders crowd him out.

42 Riera thinks he's won a corner off Brown. Howard Webb disagrees. Goal-kick is the decision, as Carrick chats with the United physio and Owen Hargreaves begins warming up.

41 Berbatov picks up the ball on the edge of the Liverpool box, but Carragher makes a fine challenge to dispossess the Bulgarian, and the ball ends up in Reina's arms.

40 Brown plays a slightly dicey backpass to van der Sar, which the keeper hacks clear. It's a pairing that won't fill United fans with confidence at the moment.

39 Quick Liverpool break ends with Carrick intercepting Arbeloa's ball across the box. Carrick almost lets the ball get away from him, but eventually clears. He's limping a bit as well - might have a bit of a problem.

38 Riera gets his head to the corner kick, and Liverpool clear their lines.

38 Rooney gets away from Aurelio on the right and whips in a cross which Skrtel heads behind for a United corner.

36 Mascherano drills a superb low cross along the six-yard box from the right, but no-one attacks it and the ball drifts behind for a goal-kick.

35 Mascherano releases Kuyt on the right, but he fails to bring the ball under control.

33 Riera's deep cross from the left is kept alive by Benayoun, who heads the ball back for the late-arriving Keane. But the former Spurs striker completely misses his kick and United eventually clear.

33 Keane finds space on the right and his cross is zeroing in on Kuyt's head before Ferdinand gets a crucial clearing touch.

32 In the absence of Ronaldo it's Anderson given the responsibility, but his effort ricochets off the defensive wall for a throw.

31 United win a free-kick 30 yards from goal. Danger here for Liverpool.

30 Huge cheers from the home crowd as Rooney's pass to the right finds touch.

29 Tevez is almost through again for United, but Reina charges out of his area, taking charge of the situation and hammering the ball into the stands. Anfield is rocking now.

28 Tevez almost restores the visitors' lead, but fires over from a low left-wing cross.

Goal26 OWN GOAL - BROWN. Catastrophe for United. Alonso goes for goal from a long way out, and the ball deflects off Evra towards goal. Van der Sar comes out and, instead of gathering the ball, tries to palm it clear. He succeeds only in pushing the ball on to Brown's thigh, and the ball rebounds almost apologetically over the line. Shocking error from the keeper.

25 A risky ball across the back four from Mascherano almost lets Anderson in, but he can't quite bring the ball down. Lucky escape for Liverpool.

24 Kuyt can't keep the ball in play on the right-hand side under pressure from Evra. That ends a decent spell of possession for Liverpool, but they struggled to get in behind the United defence.

23 Brown is penalised for a nudge in Riera's back on halfway, but Liverpool waste the free-kick.

22 The free-kick is swung into the United box and headed clear.

Yellow Card22 Tevez gets the first yellow card of the game, and he can have few complaints after crudely chopping down Arbeloa on the Liverpool right.

21 Good, quick feet from Riera keeps the ball in play on the left, but his clever ball with the outside of the left boot just fails to pick out Keane's run.

20 Berbatov gets his head to van der Sar's long clearance, but the ball trickles through to Reina.

19 Evra and Mascherano are both back to their feet, and they shake hands as the game restarts with a drop-ball.

17 There'll be a delay here after a nasty-looking clash of heads between Mascherano and Evra. Pure accident, but both players are down and in need of treatment. A chance for the rest of us to get our breath back.

16 Aurelio's deep cross is behind for a goal-kick. We did van der Sar a disservice earlier as well: replays show that after his initial error from that corner, he made the save from Kuyt rather than Brown. Sorry, Edwin.

15 Anderson's corner is cleared, and there's the chance for a quick break which Mascherano spurns.

14 Carrick crosses deep towards Ferdinand at the far post, but Carragher gets his head to the ball first to concede a corner.

13 Riera breaks into the area from the left and tumbles theatrically under no real pressure. Howard Webb rightly waves away the penalty appeals.

12 Another chance for Kuyt. Edwin van der Sar makes a mess of the corner and flaps the ball straight to Kuyt, but the Dutchman's point-blank shot is blocked by Brown.

11 Arbeloa breaks down the right, but his cross is blocked by Evra. The two contest the loose ball, and it bounces off Arbeloa's head and behind. The linesman sees it differently and awards a corner.

10 Scholes tries to free Anderson on the left, but Liverpool just about snuff out the threat. The Reds are at full stretch here.

9 Berbatov is bundled off the ball by Arbeloa, who gets the ball clear to halfway.

8 Vidic steps out but Ferdinand doesn't, and Benayoun is free on the right-hand side. But Vidic recovers to clear the winger's low cros.

7 United's attacking movement is sensational, with so much fluidity. Berbatov this time turns up in midfield to release Anderson through the middle, but he'd just strayed offside.

6 Close from Kuyt. Arbeloa's long throw bounces around the edge of the area before dropping invitingly for Kuyt. His volley is sweetly struck but flashes just wide of the upright.

4 The Kop stunned into silence by that early goal right in front of them. How will Liverpool respond?

Goal3 GOAL - TEVEZ. What a start for United. Berbatov makes his presence felt again, bursting into the area, holding off Carragher, and cutting the ball back perfectly for the onrushing Tevez, who calmly slots the ball past Reina.

2 Berbatov has his first shot very early on. Rooney releases the overlapping Wes Brown, whose low cross is well met by Berbatov. His shot crashes into Skrtel, and there are loud shouts for a penalty. Hit the arm, but that would've been harsh. Good start from the visitors, who have started in a 4-4-2 with Rooney on the right.

1 United gets us under way at Anfield as the noise levels increase.

Andrew Dawson expects Liverpool to win 2-1, but reckons the real contest will be Keane v Berbatov. It's certainly strange to see them on opposing sides after striking up such a good partnership over the last couple of years at Spurs.

Rafa Benitez says Gerrard and Torres are fit, but lacking match fitness. They'll only be used if absolutely necessary. Perhaps an early indication of the influence the seven-subs rule might have this season: a chance for managers to take a bit of a gamble on the bench.

90+2 That's your lot. It's finished goalless. Liverpool, like Chelsea earlier today, lose their 100 per cent record - the last in the league - and move onto seven points from three games. That puts them second. Villa now have four points from their three matches and lie seventh. A 0-0 draw was the right result today - there were too few goalscoring opportunities. Keane had the best late on but shot wide and subsequent penalty appeals were turned down. That may draw some debate, but it looked the right decision.

90+1 Villa fans aren't happy as Reo-Coker goes back to his keeper from halfway.

90 There will be two added minutes, says the fourth official.

90 Carragher is there again to head away Young's ball into the area.

89 Barry takes the free kick to the far post where Skrtel appears to head it back towards his own net. No worries though - captain Carragher is there to make a vital clearance.

88 Ashley Young wins a free kick as he tries to go past Auerlio down the right. This is a decent position - just outside the box out wide.

86 It's Villa doing most of the pressing in these closing stages. Can they fashion a winner?

85 Agbonlahor can't find Carew with his through ball and Reina comes out to hack the ball upfield.

84 Laursen heads just wide after a long ball from a free kick near halfway. A close shave for Liverpool that.

83 Reo-Coker drills the ball in from the right - it's hard and low but Reina does well to hold on to it. Good goalkeeping from the Spaniard.

82 Milner hits a first-time shot after the ball falls to him on the edge of the penalty area. However, his curling effort is easily saved by Reina.

81 Friedel punches clear as Liverpool get the ball into the Villa box, looking for that all-important goal.

79 Keane is replaced by Yossi Benayoun, while Craig Gardner is on for Shorey. Meanwhile, Carew is down with what looks to be cramp.

78 Shorey's cross at the other end is headed away by Alonso who has done well today.

77 Alonso delivers but it's Laursen who gets his head to the ball first.

76 A better cross this time from Dossena after he gets to the byline down the left. It flicks off Davies and goes behind for a corner.

75 Into the last 15 minutes. Liverpool could do with a goal here - it's the sort of game they need to win if they are to end that title drought.

74 A woeful cross from the left this time from Dossena. It's into the stand behind the goal.

73 Great chance for Keane. He latches onto a through ball over the top frm Mascherano and gets beyond the two Villa defenders. He's clear but drags his shot wide of Friedel's right-hand post. He got the shot away just before Reo-Coker's challenge - Keane wants a penalty - but there's nothing doing. Perhaps Reo-Coker's presence just did enough to put Keane off, but he should have opening his account there.

71 Petrov hits a decent volley but the effort is well wide from 25 yards. Seconds earlier Villa appeals for handball against Skrtel fell on deaf ears. It would have been harsh.

70 Here comes Auerlio. He'll replace Kuyt on the right-hand side. That looks a bit of a defensive move from Benitez.

69 It looks like Fabio Aurelio will be coming on soon for Liverpool.

67 Several of you will be pleased to know Babel is now warming up.

66 Stupid from Dossena. He throws the ball away behind him after arguing over a throw-in - he felt it should have been Liverpool's. The yellow card comes out.

65 Now it's a corner to Liverpool. Alonso takes it but Villa's defence clear it upfield.

64 Lucas and Arbeloa combine well down the right and the latter delivers a good ball. However, it's just too high for Keane at the far post and he can't control his header.

63 Villa's first change and it's Milner coming on for Luke Young. Reo-Coker will now head to right-back you'd think.

61 Kuyt concedes a free kick out wide. Ashley Young whips a good ball to the far post where Davies meets it. He should score but the header is mis-timed and ball comes off the side of his head and goes away from goal! That really was a great scoring opportunity.

60 An hour gone and this game has perked up since the break. It's still goalless, but attacks are more frequent now. Substitutions could have a big part to play. Will Villa gamble and go for the win? And is a draw good enough for title hopefuls Liverpool?

59 Milner is warming up on the touchline. He signed for the club in the week remember.

58 Villa are getting the ball into the box a lot now. This time it's Ashley Young and Skrtel heads behind. Corner again. This one is punched away well by keeper Reina.

57 Skrtel brings down Agbonlahor in midfield. He's already been booked and has now had a couple of fouls since. He wants to watch out.

56 This time Reo-Coker lifts the ball into the box and Alvaro Arbeloa nods behind for a corner. Ashley Young's corner is overhit and flies over everyone and out for a goal kick.

55 Ashley Young's free kick into the penalty area is easily dealt with.

54 A good period of pressure from the visitors ends with the ball running out for a goal kick. That has lifted some of the Reds fans in the ground - and perhaps some of those out there in the world wide web!

53 The corner ends up with Dossena on the far side. He delivers a superb corss under Friedel's bar and he is forced to tip it over with Ngog lurking.

52 This game is getting better now. Keane lays the ball off to Alonso whose shot comes off Shorey for a corner. Good defending from the England full-back.

51 Corner to Villa. Ashley Young centres, Carew heads goalwards and it comes off Skrtel's head. It should be a corner, but ref Atkinson gives a goal kick.

50 More feedback. Chris James isn't worried. "Liverpool often win matches in the second half. Im not worried. Whatever Rafa tells them at half time must work. We've seen it countless times, an average Liverpool in the first half, European kings in the second."

49 A cross from the left from Keane takes a nick off Davies. Shorey lets it run out thinking it would be a goal kick but the ref rightly gives a corner. Nothing comes from that though.

48 It's Alonso again - this comes off Ashley Young for another flag kick. The second corner causes Friedel problems. The American is all over the place but Davies gets there ahead of Kuyt. That was vital from the former West Brom star.

47 Alonso plays the free kick in but it's put out for a corner. Another chance to create something from a dead-ball situation.

46 Lucas battles forward and wins a free kick, drawing a foul from Reo-Coker.

Restart Villa get us back under way. Hopefully the game will improve after a fairly mundane first half. There were few chances but the ones that were created came late on, so there were suggestions of better things to come.

Liverpool fan Thomas Polovcik says the result is all that matters. "I don't really care how Liverpool is playing at the moment. I'd rather us be 1st and play badly than 2nd, 3rd or 4th as for the last 20 years." I'm sure there will be plenty who agree with you, Thomas. How about Villa fans? Are you happy with how things are going so far?

Brandon Shelton, in the US, emails to urge Liverpool to bring on Ryan Babel. "He should've been included in the starting line up and since Torres is off he will provide at least some attacking threat. Liverpool are looking weak and they need to step it up if they are to get out of Villa Park with three points. As it goes right now I would be happy with one point!" There have been a few people on saying Babel should be playing. Possible reasons - he's just back from the Olympics and is also coming back from an injury lay-off. Having said that he did come on the other night, so we may well see him in this second half.

Time for some comments. Christian Vine, who claims to be a Liverpool fan, isn't impressed. "Dull, dull, dull. Rafa is lucky and so negative. Without Gerrard we're nothing." He says he'd rather read the phone book! That's a little negative at this stage I think - it's now classic but Liverpool could go top if they score in the second half!

45+2 That's the half-time whistle and it remains goalless. there have been few goalscoring opportunities and the scoreline is certainly a fair reflection. Carew and Ngog had late chances, but the big news is that Torres is off with a hamstring injury.

45+1 Skrtel brings down Carew from behind. Villa get the chance to send a free kick into the box. They do so but Reina makes a confident catch.

45 There will be one added minute.

44 Another poor pass from Mascherano. He did well to launch a counter attack, bringing the ball into the Villa half, but with Kuyt outside him he pushes the pass too far in front of his colleague. Poor from the Argentine.

42 Another decent chance for the visitors. Keane does will to find Ngog and his shot is inches over the bar. It appeared to take a flick off Laursen, but the ref awards a goal kick. Good effort from the youngster and that's the closest we've been to a goal.

41 Lucas gets away from Luke Young down the left but then tries to cross the ball with the outside of his right foot. Use your left man! The move breaks down.

39 Dirk Kuyt drills a shot into the side netting from the right side of the box. The ball fell to him fom Shorey's poor header but the Dutchman could not make him pay. That was Liverpool's best opportunity so far.

37 Villa have definitely enjoyed the better of things since Torres went off. It remains goalless though.

35 The best effort of the match so far. Barry finds Ashley Young in the box who in turn picks out Carew and he fires a shot which Reina saves with his legs. A decent stop but perhaps Carew could have done better there.

34 Villa play the ball out of defence and launch a counter attack. They seem to have settled now and will have been boosted by the fact that Liverpool's biggest goal threat, Torres, is now off.

32 Nigel Reo-Coker makes a storming run down the right. Andreas Dossena and Mascherano team up to force him out but it's a corner. Nothing comes from that though.

30 Liverpool are finally able to bring on a replacement for Torres. It's little-known teenager Davig Ngog. Now is the time for Keane to step up to the plate.

29 Carew looks to have got away from Carragher but the whistle goes for a free kick. That looks harsh. Both men were pulling the other's shirt there.

28 Alonso appears to go for goal from halfway. He's scored like that before but was never going to beat Brad Friedel on that occasion - a right waste.

26 An injury to Torres - and this could be the biggest news so far. He chases a poor pass from Mascherano but pulls up clutching the back of his leg. It looks like a hamstring tweak and he is quickly taken off. That's a big blow to Liverpool. Not just today, but more importantly the games ahead. He could miss a few weeks with that sort of injury.

25 Luke Young crosses from the right but it's too close to Reina who claims without a challenge being put in.

23 Barry's ball forward almost falls to Carew. He nudges aside Carragher but couldn't latch onto the pass.

22 Midway through the half and Robbie Keane has done very little. He's yet to open his account for his new club and needs to do more in this one.

20 As if not to be outdone, Carew sends what can loosely be described as a shot well wide of Reina's goal.

19 Lucas hits a frankly embarrassng shot into the Holte End. At least it was a shot. The Villa fans give it a predictable, if somewhat rude, response.

18 This time Reina is forced to come out of his box to kick clear with Ashley Young threatening. He does his job well, sending the ball into the other half.

17 Carew nods down looking for Agbonlahor but the ball runs through to Jose Reina.

16 Villa win a throw in deep in Liverpool territory but when it is taken they only succeed in throwing it out for a goal kick. A real waste.

15 Still no chances. Liverpool are always a difficult side to break down but Villa's attacking prowess should be a test for them today.

13 Martin Skrtel tugs at John Carew's shirt. No surprise that a yellow card follows from ref Martin Atkinson.

12 Xabi Alonso whips the ball in but Martin Laursen's towering header clears the ball well upfield.

11 Torres wins Liverpool their first corner off Luke Young.

10 Ashley Young opts to cross but the ball curls wide of the far post, Curtis Davies unable to get on the end of it.

9 Stilyan Petrov is pulled down by Mascherano. Free kick in a good position outside the box, left of centre.

8 Both sides continue to look for an opening. No efforts on goal yet and fairly even.

6 Liverpool fan Philip Ryan isn't confident but makes a good point. "After the midweek exertions it is Aston Villa who are going to win this." Remember Liverpool went to extra time on Wednesday in the Champions League. Perhaps that will hurt them come the second half - they have largely the same side on show here.

5 It's Fernando Torres who defends that flag kick, heading it away at the near post.

4 Gabriel Agbonlahor wins the first corner of the game off Jamie Carragher.

3 Liverpool are seeing plenty of ball early on. No chances yet though.

1 A packed Villa Park crowd are quick to get onto Liverpool, booing their touches in the early stages. It's the visitors who do the early pressing though.

Kick-off Liverpool, in an odd-looking silver kit, get the match under way.

Uros Djokic, Mariee Pryor and Danny Stewart are all backing Liverpool to win this one. Liverpool fan Danny says: "They have played dire so far this season. Things can only get better!" Well, two wins from two games is pretty good when not at your best. That's something Liverpool haven't managed to do in recent years - pick up points when failing to hit their straps. Remember a win today and they will be top of the league. We are about to get under way.

90 Kuyt takes the corner and again free header from Skrtel and it goes wide.

Yellow Card77 Keane is booked for dissent over the penalty claims.

77 Gerrard takes, Huth clears but there is a foul and Boro can clear.

76 Just wide from Liverpool. The ball is knocked down by Torres and Gerrard is there to fire at goal - Huth blocks and the ball goes behind for corner amid appeals for a penalty, but nothing given.

66 Carragher clears with a great header away from Mido - who was waiting at the back post. The ball comes for O'Neil on the edge but he shoots wide.

63 Real danger for Liverppol as they win a free-kick on the edge of the box - Gerrard this time fires it in and Turnbull has to punch it away.

Substitution59 Mido comes on for Alves as Boro make the first change.

58 Another corner for Liverpool. Alonso tries again and it is bad once again. Why are Liverpool not changing the taker?

57 Huth brings down Keane about 25-yards, maybe a bit more, from goal. Gerrard goes for goal but it goes behind off the wall.

56 Shawky tackles Torres in the box - the Kop appeals for a penalty but nothing given.

American frustration No not from Hicks or Gillett but Liverpool fan Dennis Pepperack in Nashville - he thinks this is just more of the same from The Reds! Liverpool fan Stuart Drewery still thinks they will ease to victory - Send your comments to megraeme.bailey@bskyb.com

51 Keane dribbles down the left and creates space for the cross and he picks at Kuyt but his header is tame and easy for Turnbull to collect.

51 Good ball from Tuncay finds Alves but a great challenge from Jamie Carragher denies the Brazilian a clear chance of shooting.

50 Kuyt looks for space on the right but his cross to the back post is poor. Liverpool dominating possession early in the second-half.

Reds reaction Sean Sheibani from Toronto and Vibs are both still very confident Liverpool will break down Boro.

47 Keane wins an early corner after nice flick into the box from Gerrard. Alonso takes the out-swinger but another poor delivery.

Kick-off Liverpool re-start the match and neither side has made a change.

Reaction Mainly Boro fans so far, Giles Heaton cannot see Boro getting beat 4-0 anymore! And Katy Morris thinks they can get something but would like to see new signings Emnes and Digard brought into the action.

Half Time45 Whistle goes for the break - good contest so far.

45 Late corner for Liverpool and they have numbers forward. Again Alonso takes but it is very poor and Taylor clears.

45 Great chance for Downing as he breaks down the right, he cuts back on his left but instead of crossing for Alves or Tuncay, he goes for goal and it is well wide. Chance came from poor play from Gerrard, as he gave the ball away cheaply in midfield.

45 Three minutes of added time here.

44 Boro free-kick from Downing is floated into the box, where Wheater is there to connect but it is straight at Reina.

43 Gary O'Neil is down after tough challenge from Skrtel on the edge of the box, again a bit lucky.

41 Huth slides the ball behind as Torres breaks into the box and looks to cross for Keane. Liverpool pressing now as Boro scramble the corner clear.

39 Great play by Keane as breaks from deep, he plays Torres into the box but his shot deflects off Pogatetz although the Spaniard's shot was heading well wide. Boro clear the corner.

38 End to end stuff here as Tuncay is everywhere looking for a breakthrough but he is held of by Skrtel - Liverpool break on Boro but Turnbull is out quickly to clear up-field.

37 Great defending from Wheater as he comes across to deny Torres. Brilliant link-up play between Keane and Torres to set the chance up.

35 Great run from Downing as he cuts inside past Kuyt and Arbeloa - but curls his right footed shot well wide. Real chance for the England winger.

34 Good defending from Robert Huth as he battles with Torres before managing to clear the ball. Boro are digging in here.

33 Corner for Liverpool as Pogatetz puts it behind. Alonso takes short to Benayoun, he crosses for Skrtel who tries and acrobatic overhead kick - but it flys wide.

31 Trademark strike from Gerrard from the edge of the box after nice work from Torres - but the Reds captain sees his shot dip over the bar. A bit more like it from the home side.

29 Taylor gives the ball away poorly on the left - Kuyt breaks and plays a nice one-two with Keane. The Dutchman then cuts the ball back and Gerrard goes tumbling and looks for a penalty - but replays show he ran into the back of Pogatetz, good decision from Mike Riley.

28 Torres is more creator at the moment and he again finds his new strike-partner Keane, but his shot is blocked and Boro manage to scramble it clear before the home side concede a free-kick.

Yellow Card26 Arbeloa is first player into the referees note book for a late challenge on Shawky.

24 Long ball up field from Gerrard forces Pogatetz to head into touch. Torres picks up the ball from the throw, finds his countryman Alonso but the pass is wasted.

22 Bad challenge from Alonso on Shawky as he goes above the ball on the Egypt midfielder - the Spaniard is very lucky to escape any punishment from Mike Riley.

21 Pressure from Boro here as Tuncay brings it down in the box - he plays it out to Downing, and his cross almost finds Aliadiere at the back post but the Frenchman misses it. Decent stuff from Boro.

21 Nice footwork from the attacking minded Dossena, he crosses into the box but it is too close to Turnbull and he claims it.

19 Boro break quickly and Tuncay flicks the ball through to a clear Alves but the offside flag denies him.

18 Torres wins a free-kick just insde Boro's half - he launches an outlandish shot at goal - but it flys well wide.

15 Boro free-kick is pumped into Liverpool half by Wheater, it falls for Tuncay in the box and he thinks about going over, but he plays on looking for Aliadiere - but Liverpool clear their lines.

13 Both sides play on with ten-men whilst their players get treatment - Boro are on the attack and Jose Reina provides a great save from Andrew Taylor.

11 Aliadiere is down after a clash of heads with Dossena. Both are in need of treatment.

8 Jeremie Aliadiere lets the ball go out of play for a corner - what was he thinking? - It comes in from Xabi Alonso and Torres heads wide. Let off for the Frenchman.

6 Free-kick in a dangerous position on the Liverpool left as David Wheater hacks down Dossen. Steven Gerrard is over it but Downing heads clear - it comes for Yossi Benayoun but it is well over the bar.

5 Mohamed Shawky tries one from 30-yards but it is close to hitting the roof on the Kop!

4 Torres again causing problems, he finds Keane on the edge of the box but he slices his shot well wide.
